42 Piscine

Last month, I took part in the 42 Piscine in Wolfsburg, Germany. The Piscine is an intensive?selection procedure for admission to the famous 42 School of Computer Science, headquartered in Paris, France.

The experience is mind-blowing because it puts your resilience, ability to learn from others, and soft skills to the test over the course of four weeks. In a hands-on approach, you will be required to complete a series of projects in C, a programming language that is very near to the "nuts and bolts" of the machine. If you perform well in all of these areas, you may be invited to participate in an 18-24 month computer science program that will prepare you to work as a professional programmer, network designer, or data architect.

How is that relevant to risk management?

Well, it all depends on how you see the risk management practice can add value to the business. In my opinion, a control environment that is effective is founded on the capacity to establish a sound control environment while simultaneously reducing the administrative burden on the business. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to enhance our abilities in data management, system design, and programming.

In other words, adding manual controls increases overhead and bureaucracy for the business; however, implementing automated controls that are also monitored electronically allows you to strengthen the control environment while reducing the administrative workload of managing controls.

As risk managers, our role does not typically involve creating our own programming scripts; we generally depend on IT teams to handle that task. However, during the design of control and monitoring frameworks, it is crucial to comprehend the interactions between systems and the utilization of data throughout sales, onboarding, and transaction processes.

In sum, strong knowledge of the system and data architecture will enable us to create better controls.

Please let me know your thoughts.?

Daniel.

PS. By the way, at the end of the Piscine, I was accepted in the 42’s formal training program!
