42 Hot remote job opportunities, Spotify HR chief says remote staff "aren’t children" & other CEOs say "Hell no to RTO"

(?? Hot job listings at the bottom)

Just when I thought the whole return-to-office debate was going to finally simmer down a notch, it didn't...

On the heels of Amazon CEO Andy Jassy's tone-deaf RTO mandate starting at the beginning of the year, the entire world of skill workers have been waiting on baited breath to see how smaller companies would respond.

These CEOs of smaller companies sure as hell want to do the same thing, but they don't want to cut their nose off to spite their face.

They're likely going to keep a close eye on how things turn out for the likes of Amazon, Dell, Zoom and other larger organizations to gauge how significant the fallout would be for their company.

The initial response from impacted employees has been TERRIBLE. Surprise, surprise.

73% of impacted Amazon employees say they are considering looking for another job. (I can vouch for that - a whopping 26% of my profile viewers since I started posting remote jobs are now current Amazon employees!)

One employee stated:

“My morale for this job is gone, gonna totally check out till PIP.”

And then we have Dell, who is looking more and more like a comic book supervillain twirling their executive mustaches with a shocking two day notice to return back to the office full-time, leaving parents scrambling to find last-minute childcare.

Not a good look.

Some CEOs aren't buying in

Some CEOs are preempting the entire conversation with an emphatic 'hell no!' to even considering the potential for RTO.

CEO Mike Landau of ParkMyFleet said:

"As an employee who joined a company as a remote worker, it would feel like a bait-and-switch move if the CEO then decided to change the remote work policy. I would find that very disconcerting."

See his LinkedIn post below:

And then we have the biggest shocker: Spotify taking a hard line against RTO. Spotify 's chief human resources officer Katarina Berg said:

"You can’t spend a lot of time hiring grownups and then treat them like children. Work is not a place you come to, it’s something you do."

A lot of people (including myself) agree with this sentiment.

It's possible that these forward-thinking companies aren't tethered to long-term commercial leases. Or they don't have the old-school C-suite and middle managers pressing for their fix of "executive nostalgia." Or, they truly are thinking strategically and looking at widely available data.

A lot of data says RTO is a bad idea for employees and employers

It's still shocking to a lot of people that the likely negative consequences of RTO mandates isn't obvious common sense, but here we are.

A McKinsey study showed that 38% of women with children will either leave the workforce entirely, or be forced to reduce their hours. That's really not good. A study by Upwork showed that 63% of C-suite leaders whose companies implemented return-to-office mandates say the policy has led a disproportionate number of women to quit.

A Gartner survey showed that high performers are the most likely to quit when companies implement RTO mandates. Because, duh.

A study by Harvard shows that employee surveillance tracking results in resentment and a decline in performance.

Great Place to Work's data shows that RTO mandates cause "resenteeism", resulting in a "mail-it-in" type of attitude.

Lastly, and this is probably the least surprising, Global Workforce Insights reports that RTO policies make it harder to recruit. Obviously.

What are your thoughts on RTO policies? Are you being impacted? Do you have strong feelings like me? Leave your opinion in the comments!

It'll be interesting to see if a lot of Amazon employees actually jump ship before the RTO mandate goes into effect.
