#404: Read, View, and Do: 6 Reasons Why Micro-Learning Will Make a Huge Impact On Your Organisation

What Is Micro-Learning?

Micro-Learning is a method of learning that delivers content to employees in short, very specific bursts (think bite-sized learning or learning nuggets).

Micro-learning activities are usually completed in less than four minutes (1-7 minutes), making them digestible and manageable.

At Manage Train Learn, we are devotees of micro-learning with nearly all of our materials, whether videos, slides, quizzes, or games, being short, specific, and easy-to-remember.

So, if you are responsible for delivering learning to your team, and still haven't converted to the Micro-learning approach, have a look at the 6 reasons in this newsletter and why they will make a big impact on your organisation...

01. Demand From the Modern Learner

The average attention span of an adult in the year 2000 was 12 seconds. Today it is down to about 8 seconds, just one second short of the attention span of a goldfish. This means that traditional learning materials with lengthy explanations no longer cut it with busy and attention-challenged learners...

02. Learner Fatigue and Frustration

Micro-learning delivers short, focused sessions that help learners avoid mental burnout and can promote increased energy and alertness. This means that time-challenged learners are more and more likely to prefer short and specific learning that they can access more frequently, when they want it.

03. Busy Work Environment

According to current studies, employees are interrupted every 4 minutes on average. They have only about 5 minutes a day to allot to training. However, 58% of employees say they would use their organisation's learning materials more often if the content were broken up into shorter lessons.

04. Budget and Resource Benefits

Micro-learning, as opposed to traditional forms of learning, brings a whole raft of benefits to the organisation, including the following...

  1. Shorter learning chunks mean that the cost of creating learning materials is quicker and so cheaper.
  2. Unlike traditional courses, the completion rates of micro-learning courses tend to be higher, at 75% to 95%.
  3. There is less administration to do on micro-courses as compared to traditional courses.
  4. On the whole, people prefer micro-learning because it is easier to access and use within their normal day.
  5. Because they are short, micro-learning courses can be easier to update for localized and globalized use.

05. Need to Reach More Learners

Micro-learning is the perfect answer to users who don't have their own desk or work station, as modern technology enables them to access learning materials at any time and wherever they are.

06. Leverage Technology Advances

Micro-learning is the perfect partner to mobile devices, such as i-pads or i-phones. Micro-learning is mobile-friendly, mobile-ready, mobile-responsive, and mobile-adaptive.

07. Putting It All Together

So, in summary, using micro-learning formats gives you the following benefits...

  1. Small, but complete, learning experiences
  2. Bite-sized chunks that are easier to learn and remember
  3. Step-by-step structures
  4. Easier-to-read and easier-to-understand materials
  5. Access on smart devices
  6. Usable whenever needed
  7. Engaging in different formats, eg slideshows, short videos, audio

08. Video: "What Is Microlearning?" with Ruud Riis

The microlearning method is an approach to skill acquisition that uses small learning units instead of long-form content. Microlearning is also called "bite sized learning" or "just in time learning".

This concept is trending within e-learning, corporate training and education in general. The reason? A rise in digital devices, fast internet and a want to learn the same way we consume media elsewhere.

Microlearning is an effective method of consuming learning content as we can't hold on to much more than 5 to 9 facts at a time anyway. This just-in-time principle let's us learn a little at a time, more often.

09. Exercise: "Create Your Own Microlearning Resources"

Decide on a topic that you want your team to learn.

Now, create or use the following mix of short and specific materials that will help your users learn the topic:

  1. Write out the Key Points of the topic as succinctly as possible.
  2. Source a video on the topic from YouTube ensuring it is no more than 5 minutes long.
  3. Do the same in audio format.
  4. Create a follow-up "Quiz-of-the-day" question on the topic for users to answer.
  5. Create "Spaced repetition" techniques to review the learning over the course of a week
  6. Create mobile flashcards to test trainees' understanding.
  7. Use gamification techniques such as matching pairs, true or false questions, and multiple choice questions for individuals, pairs, or teams.
