400 Days, 4 Marathons, 1 Unstoppable Me: How I Prioritized Health (and You Can Too!)
The pandemic was a wake-up call for many, myself included. As things began to settle down in 2021, I realized health needed to be a top priority. But maintaining discipline was the challenge. Gyms seemed too easy to skip with life's interruptions. I craved something bigger, a test that would keep me committed.
An avid runner with few marathons under my belt, I decided to push my limits an idea was born to run 4 full marathons (26.2 miles) in 400 days. The longer timeframe meant more difficulty and more discipline. Scoring entries into the 2022 Chicago and 2023 New York City Marathons sealed the deal – I was locked in.
Training for one marathon is a feat, but four? That meant year-round commitment. Early mornings, late evenings, dodging rain showers – you name it, I ran through it. Discipline became my middle name (though some days it felt more like "Desperation"). Finally, on November 5th, 2023, at 1:30 pm EST, I finally reached my audacious goal (I still can't believe I did it).
Reflecting on this journey, here are the key takeaways that fueled my success:
We chase after bigger salaries, bonuses, and stock options, but are we neglecting our most valuable asset: our health? It's time to consider "health compensation" – the investments we make in ourselves that pay off in countless ways. The more committed you are to healthy habits, the better you'll feel. And guess what? These habits are contagious! People aren't inspired by hearing about someone who constantly puts in long hours. But when they see someone prioritizing their well-being, it can be a spark of motivation. Does this suggest that our society undervalues health? That's a question for another day, but it's certainly worth pondering.
What can you do - Your health goal might be different: hitting the gym five times a week, taking 100 classes a year, or a daily walk. Find what works for you and stick with it. It'll become second nature.
