400 Days, 4 Marathons, 1 Unstoppable Me: How I Prioritized Health (and You Can Too!)

The pandemic was a wake-up call for many, myself included. As things began to settle down in 2021, I realized health needed to be a top priority. But maintaining discipline was the challenge. Gyms seemed too easy to skip with life's interruptions. I craved something bigger, a test that would keep me committed.

An avid runner with few marathons under my belt, I decided to push my limits an idea was born to run 4 full marathons (26.2 miles) in 400 days. The longer timeframe meant more difficulty and more discipline. Scoring entries into the 2022 Chicago and 2023 New York City Marathons sealed the deal – I was locked in.

Training for one marathon is a feat, but four? That meant year-round commitment. Early mornings, late evenings, dodging rain showers – you name it, I ran through it. Discipline became my middle name (though some days it felt more like "Desperation"). Finally, on November 5th, 2023, at 1:30 pm EST, I finally reached my audacious goal (I still can't believe I did it).

Reflecting on this journey, here are the key takeaways that fueled my success:

  1. Anything is Possible: Any goal can be reached with unwavering willpower and hard work. If someone tells you that you can't do that, use that negativity to push yourself further.
  2. Have clear Priorities - Watching TV/Late night binging over sleep early and getting out for some activity in the morning. We always have a choice. . always! I personally juggled an Executive MBA over weekends and a job change during those 400 days but that didn't faze me. I ran at dawn, dusk, or whenever I could. Discipline is about making time, not excuses. Commit, and you'll find a way.
  3. The Power of Support: Achieving such feats is nearly impossible without a strong support system. My work colleagues were incredibly understanding, and my wife's unwavering belief was my rock. Her motivation even led her to complete her first marathon alongside me!

We chase after bigger salaries, bonuses, and stock options, but are we neglecting our most valuable asset: our health? It's time to consider "health compensation" – the investments we make in ourselves that pay off in countless ways. The more committed you are to healthy habits, the better you'll feel. And guess what? These habits are contagious! People aren't inspired by hearing about someone who constantly puts in long hours. But when they see someone prioritizing their well-being, it can be a spark of motivation. Does this suggest that our society undervalues health? That's a question for another day, but it's certainly worth pondering.

What can you do - Your health goal might be different: hitting the gym five times a week, taking 100 classes a year, or a daily walk. Find what works for you and stick with it. It'll become second nature.

What's next for me - This marathon machine isn't slowing down. Fueled by this epic achievement, I'm gearing up for a new adventure: a 3-day, 270-mile bike expedition! Stay tuned to see how I conquer the open road on two wheels!
