‘400 Club’-Brown Egg Layer Program: ‘Longevity’ the ultimate solution to sustainable Poultry Production.

The poultry industry in the UK is going through a rough patch due to various reasons. Overall industry metrics will reveal to us the uplift in both, the layer and breeder chick placements, with associated huge cost of production (feed costs in particular). The part of the problem is the lack of access to the international markets such as EU after Brexit, Covid-19 restrictions and quite recently Avian influenza is playing its part.

Looking at the historic UK egg industry data (2010-2019) there is an increase of 8 million commercial layers (approximately from 34 to 42 million hens), which partly reflects the rise in egg consumption per capita i.e., 180 to 198. There is also a dynamic shift reported in free range hen numbers, which is 7.3 to 29.8 million hens, which means 75.5% of the total hens are currently in free range systems in UK (EPIC, 2021 & Egg Info, 2021).

The multi-tier free range systems together with the modern welfare, nutritional and managemental regimes, have contributed a lot in achieving the breed standards. At the same time this rise in free range hen numbers and associated feed costs will pose a potential threat to the egg industry in achieving the optimum genetic production potential of the hens. Keeping these vital points in mind where most of the brown egg laying breeds are capable of producing 400 eggs/HH in 90 weeks of age, we offer natural solutions program; to achieve longevity and sustainability in the existing flocks.

Wyreside Products UK LTD (A Herbonis Group Company) has decided to introduce a 400 club-Brown Layer Program. We have already proved this concept in several other countries in various field and university trials and now launching this innovative program for the UK & Irish markets. This dynamic program will mainly focus on Longevity (Optimum Egg Shell Quality), Laying Persistency (Optimum Production) and Profitability (Maximise Saleable Eggs).

There are three key areas where we will be inviting the industry leaders from every segment of poultry industry including Genetic, Premix, Feed Mills, Integrators, and Farmers to become a member of this group.

+?????The first key area is to start a series of field trials with close coordination with UK based universities, where we will be monitoring all the zootechnical parameters and further evaluation of the bone health and eggshell through lab tests. ?Consequently, enabling us to generate data of the flock performances nationwide. The trial quantities and the cost will be equally shared with all the members of the program. The important point to note here is that the first series of trials have already begun in the UK.

+?????The second key area will be to arrange technical debates, seminars, and data sharing events with all the participating members to further enhance the scope of the benefits for all the members.
