Dr. Shaikh Asrof Ali is a Distinguished Professor at the Chemistry Department, KFUPM. He joined KFUPM in 1981 after obtaining his PhD from the University of New York at Buffalo and has been an active member of KFUPM community for 40 years. Prof. Ali's areas of research specialization include Organic Synthesis, Polymer Synthesis, Corrosion Inhibition, Antiscalants, Fracturing Fluids for oil fields, Demulsifiers and Kinetic Hydrate Inhibitors.

Prof. Ali is a prolific author who contributed to his field of research through developing new synthetic protocols for application in natural product synthesis and through synthesizing a plethora of polymers for their applications in oil & petroleum industries as antiscalants, demulsifiers, fracturing fluids, kinetic hydrate inhibitors, and mild steel corrosion inhibitors. In fact he reveived a number of research funds from the University as well as external industrial clients to address challenging issues in oil and gas application. He and his group have introduced an interesting class of ionic polymers to the literature. They also pioneered in introducing special functional motifs in the field of corrosion inhibition.

The performance and novel contribution of Prof. Ali were recognized at different levels. He received a number of notable awards and recognitions that include:

  • Al-Marai Award for Distinguished Researcher in Chemistry, 2009.
  • Distinguished Professor Award, KFUPM: 2011-2023
  • Distinguished Researcher Award (Thrice), 1994, 1999, and 2011 KFUPM.
  • Distinguished Teaching & Advising Award??2001, KFUPM.
  • Special Distinguished Research Award, College of Science 2003

On the account on his significance in the community Prof. Ali stated,?"I have been the Chemistry Editor of our esteemed journal AJSE (Arabian Journal of Science & Engineering) for a long time. I have mentored numerous graduate & ungraduated students and guided many junior faculty. I have provided free consultation to solve some problems faced by local industries."
