40 Things I Learned by 40

  1. Sit with the kid in the cafeteria that’s by himself… he may end up being your best friend
  2. Some of those kids you thought were weird in high school are some of the most interesting people when you get older
  3. Don’t always listen to your parents. I really wasn’t the cutest one at school and I always talk about religion and politics
  4. It’s not just getting your bell rung… it’s a concussion! I played cornerback at Allen HS loved to hit receivers and running backs.
  5. I won’t always want a lifted truck, with big tires, dual exhaust and subwoofers bumping
  6. Aging parents is tough!
  7. What you say in an angry moment may stay with you forever
  8. Your career will not be a straight shot to the top
  9. Nothing good rarely happens after midnight
  10. No drugs, tattoos, piercings, motorcycles, no arrest and I’ve got no regrets
  11. Keep in touch with friends is hard work but the most rewarding thing you will do
  12. Being connected to a church and community is so beneficial when going through rough times… and you can help people in their time of despair too
  13. It’s not about the size of the ring or wedding but the focus should be on the marriage and relationship…. After the wedding it’s just the two of you and nobody cares.
  14. Pick a career and stick with it… I didn’t love real estate when I started but love the work and the life it affords me now.
  15. You are going to fail in life… it’s okay!
  16. You can’t fix all of your kids problems. Prepare them for the path not blaze the path for them
  17. People who act like they have the most money… usually don’t
  18. Common sense is not common practice
  19. Real education starts once you walk out the doors of school
  20. It’s not where you start but where you finish
  21. When you know you know! I met and married my wife in one year. We just celebrated 15 years of marriage (married 7.7.07). I almost asked her to marry me the first 60 days I knew her without a ring and wish I would have…. Pray my girls future boyfriends don’t read this.
  22. Never put parameters on yourself of your kids… you will overestimate what you can do in a year and underestimate what you can do in a decade
  23. When you take a stance on something, you will make some enemies along the way… that’s okay
  24. Law of compound interest is amazing… grateful I started investing at a young age!
  25. You won’t remember much you’ve watched on TV but somehow your brain can recall things you read at really critical times
  26. Travel: Change of Place + Change of Pace will always change your Perspective. I can’t wait for Israel later this year!
  27. When purchasing something, evaluate what it’s worth not what it cost
  28. Your life moves in the direction of your strongest thoughts. Be careful what you see and put in your head.
  29. Pray – Jeremiah 29:11 (The Bible) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, to give you a hope and a future.
  30. ?Be Generous – “What you keep to yourself you lose, what you give away will be yours forever”
  31. Be vulnerable… we are all going through something
  32. If someone offers you a breath mint… take it.
  33. Always show gratitude for people that have played major role in your life. I’m grateful for Jack Graham (Pastor at Prestonwood), Todd Graham (High School Football Coach), Bob Mohr, Rob Pipkin, and my team now at Cresa pouring into me.
  34. It’s always better to be overdressed then under dressed… when in doubt put a sport coat on.
  35. The Cowboys will disappoint you every year of your life… don’t get too excited that this year is the year the win a Super Bowl.
  36. When it’s your kids it will different is a lie…. I couldn’t stand changing diapers and so glad I’m out of that phase of my life.
  37. You really do look heavier on camera… I really do need to watch all the Dr. Peppers and candy I eat now that I’m shooting videos on LinkedIn
  38. You don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate
  39. James 1 (The Bible) Testing of your faith produces perseverance, let perseverance finish it’s work so that you may be mature and complete and lack nothing
  40. The past is the past and it doesn’t last…
