40 items that have shaped 40 years of privacy

Our understanding of privacy has been shaped by 40 years of cultural, economic and tech changes. But what does privacy mean to you? John Edwards discusses the object he’d submit to the ICO’s Our Lives, Our Privacy exhibition.
The world today is a different one to 40 years ago, when the ICO was first founded. The explosion of technology over the past four decades has changed and challenged our relationship with what is private and what isn’t in ways we could never have imagined. But if I were to enter an item to the exhibition – it would be something more analogue.

These records represent my time as a lawyer in the 90s. I used the powers that we have through information rights to help people, including my own family, to exercise their information rights and expose the scandal of abuse of children in the New Zealand mental health system in the 1970s.
That initial folder of paper records created a domino effect, and has resulted in payment of compensation, the issuing of apologies to those affected and the establishment of a Royal Commission looking at abuse in state care – and showed the true power of our rights.
Put simply, those paper records for me represent the way that information rights allow us to live freely and protect us from harm. It shows how information rights are fundamental human rights. They give us control over our lives and the information we wish to share and empower us to question and hold our public authorities to account.
Privacy, our definitions of what that means and the moments that have shaped our perceptions of privacy are all personal. And so, we want you to join in the conversation. Let us know what object you’d add to our online gallery to represent privacy and information rights from the past 40 years. Comment below or use #OurLivesOurPrivacy to tell us your story

Not having businesses paper work end up on my property because they couldn’t archive correctly….. Not disclosing sensitive information with other third parties without the appropriate procedures in place. And not relying on this is the way we have always worked there for this is what we do (custom and practice) just because you always have does not mean it’s within current legislation today.

3 个月The ICO allow employers and their legal teams to be unaccountable for their failures. I have documented evidence an employer and their lawyers have been dishonest to the ICO giving inconsistent responses with no documented evidence.
