40* examples of what NOT to post on LinkedIn when you have resigned from your role during a global pandemic.

*It may not actually be 40. When you read the last point on the list you'll realise why I don't actually know what the correct number is.

Anyhow, I finish up at AusNet Services next week.

In due course I’ll update my status so we can chinwag about the new role I’m heading to.

But for now, rather than go one by one thanking all the deserved people that have guided, influenced, supported and tolerated me and then dealing with the embarrassment of forgetting someone or not being able to come up with the right words and then realising that I’m not dead and that I’m just changing jobs and in my new role AusNet will be a key partner for me so I’ll be around annoying everyone I wanted to thank anyway and now it’s their time to buy me lunch..... [breathe]….I’d just share a few reflections, learnings and thoughts from my eight brilliant years at AusNet.

Buckle in for a random stream of consciousness, presented in no particular order and with most of them probably making little sense:

-         Fast beats slow and never let perfection get in the way of great.

-         Hire well. Pay the extra $10k for A graders. If the culture fit isn’t right, just say no.

-         Surround yourself with people better than you and believe in them. They will then believe in you.

-         If you are having a bad day, tell someone.

-         If you aren’t thinking about and talking to your clients, someone else is.

-         If you aren’t fostering your partner and supplier relationships, someone else is.

-         You can never do enough road trips.

-         Hours in the office is a horrible way to measure someone’s productivity.

-         Kill off unnecessary reporting.

-         People have things going on at home that you don’t know about. Be empathetic.

-         Nothing is more important than trust.

-         McDonald's is the answer to most things even though Hungry Jacks has better burgers.

-         Learn to tell stories.

-         Lock out time in your diary daily for yourself. A walk. The Gym. Lunch. Meditation.

-         Those who can make the complex appear simple are worth their weight in gold.

-         Be yourself at work.

-         Your influence is wider than just your direct reports.

-         Be a sponge and never stop being curious.

-         If a decision was based on good due diligence and from the right set of values, then it doesn’t matter what the result of that decision ultimately turns out to be.

-         Keep reminding your people of why you hired them and how good they are.

-         Selecting a supplier based primarily on price only leads to poor outcomes for everyone.

-         The Clean Energy Council’s Gala Dinner is the greatest night of the year to network in the renewable energy industry.

-         Never guess on commercials….or engineering….or your stakeholder’s drivers.

-         If I could just find a way to turn the amount of time people waste on supposition and speculation into something productive…..

-         Don’t be the smartest guy in the room. Be the most energetic.

-         Know when to shut up. Know when to get out of the way.

-         Being assertive will get you over the line 95% of the time. It’s that other 5% where you need to tread very carefully.

-         If you don’t understand the risks, don’t make the decision.

-         Those who give back to their communities aren’t valued anywhere near enough.

-         Tasmania is the best place in Australia. Or is it the Victorian High Country? One can never be too sure about these things.

-         There’s nothing quite like walking into a 500kV substation.

-         Good construction managers are so undervalued.

-         Wins are hard to get. Celebrate them. Invite everyone.

-         Stop looking inwards. Look outwards. There’s more to see.

-         You are allowed to make friends at work and let them into your personal life.

-         After a few glasses, all Scotch or wine tastes the same, irrespective of price.

-         Replace the word “but” with “and”. Change your language, change your life.

-         The Mitre Tavern is the best steakhouse in Melbourne.

-         I have a very short attention span.
