40% is Not 100%

Last week at my Friday spin class, our coach Steph Corker, reminded us that we are already 40% through the calendar year (even with the Leap Year back in February). That means I have 60% left of the year to complete my goals. I definitely made headway, but I’m not feeling 100% that I will accomplish everything. With some goals I already know I won’t be able to fulfill them. Others have already happened. Then I have been inspired by a few things that I want to add and fulfill this year. So why not? They’re my goals and I can define and adjust my goals whenever I want!
First, I’m going to check in with my progress. Here’s what I intended to do in 2016:
- I live more outside I don’t know what this means. I think I was feeling a little caged in. It was winter time and the weather can be quite gloomy sometimes in Vancouver. Here’s what I have done so far: Skied and bike rides with my family. I am committed to walking my dog Sadie more this summer and help her lose weight.
I outwardly express my love for the people I care most about in my life ?
- I did start out the year recognizing people I care deeply about. I had a great time with girlfriends in Toronto when I was there in April for a work trip. Work has definitely trumped my inner heart. My time has been compressed and I have not balanced my time with people I care deeply about. This goal needs a more explicit strategy.
I travel far away and explore new cultures and innovations
- This will happen. I am attending Aging 2.0 and SHINE conferences this fall. I am also going to Australia. I decided this past week to complete my igolu Level 2 certification this summer. This will round out my skills in project leadership, as well as give me a much needed boost in myself.
I am more patient with #SadieLove (rinse n' repeat from 2015!) ??
- Sadie has taken the lead more than I have. She’s now 2.5 years old and has calmed down considerably. I’m more conscious of not scolding her as much and my patience level seems more in control. I am committed to walking her more during the summer months and helping her learn how to swim.
I take comfort in mystery
- This one has not been easy. I like to have an answer for everything. I read a ton and reach out to my network weekly if I need an idea or answer to a problem. I don’t like waiting and want more every day. All this is good, so long as I don’t go below the line and take my team with me. As I take on big challenges and new initiatives at work, I will balance my health and invest more in relationships with people I care about. Nothing can out-perform trust and happiness in my relationships with others.
I see Cold Play and Dave Matthews at the Gorge live ??
- Cold Play is happening and I am psyched to go. Since they aren’t coming to Vancouver I took the plunge thanks to Veronica Tissera. We are going to see them at the Rose Bowl in southern California! Dave Matthews has been put on hold. He only plays Labour Day weekend at the Gorge. Unfortunately I am heading up to Whistler for a family getway. Good reason to push off Dave this specific weekend. So instead, I am going to Duran Duran with my buddy Claudia Vorlaufer. And fingers crossed I will say good bye to Gordon Downie from the Hip on July 24.
I spin 3 days a week
- I feel confident that I can say this goal is happening. There’s been the odd 1-2 weeks when I don’t go and sweat my arse off. But then I go and take on 4-5 days a week to make up for it.
I go to yoga 1 day a week ??
- Drat! I need this and I have completely lost this goal this year. I need to strengthen my upper body and lower back. I have recommitted to this goal and will go to my first class this week.
I visit New York, Toronto, Australia??, local mountains and Whistler, Lake Pennask ?? Chicago and Santa Barbara
- I am taking my youngest daughter to NYC this fall. I took my eldest daughter to New York a few years ago. I love seeing their expression when they are inspired and in awe of the grandeur of a big city like New York. Tea at the Plaza, wandering through the Natural History Museum, riding bikes in Central Park and taking in a Broadway show. All little girls should care to dream and explore this beautiful city.
- Toronto – check and check. Had a great time in April catching up with friends from the last 20-28 years of my life!
- Mountains – done and done. Lots of skiing in this year.
- We’re heading to Lake Pennask for our annual family fishing trip. There will be about 35 of us there. This summer is a special one as it will be the first without my step-father Terry.
- I am speaking at the SHINE conference in Chicago in September.
- I am going to try my dandiest to get to Santa Barbara for a day trip this year to visit my sister-in-law and her family.
I take in the calm of my backyard with friends and family
- The backyard is ready to go. We stocked it with cool lounge furniture for a relaxing vibe. New iTunes playlists are loaded up. Kicking off our first BBQ party on June 4.
I write a will
- Not done and haven’t even considered what my step in my goal is. Yikes. Need to devote some juices to this one.
I learn about franchising and home care
- I am definitely learning. It’s been more trial and error at this point. Therefore I am designing the next 6 months to round out my onboarding to the senior home care industry. I am visiting franchisee’s this summer, attending SHINE, Aging 2.0 and NAHC.
I speak at 5 events on leadership, fulfillment and culture #happieraging
- I have completed 3 events; scheduled for my fourth this fall and waiting to hear back on my fifth event.
What I will be adding and adjusting:
- I am completing my igolu Level 2 certification on Integrated Project Leadership so that I can develop our people to deliver on their strategic commitments and thoughtfully plan their work.
- We are skiing more as a family this winter. The kids will be enrolled in lessons so they can build their endurance and strength.
- I am teaching my daughters how to bake – cookies, cinnamon buns, fruit pies – and how to do laundry this summer.
- I am registering for Pure Barre to strengthen and tone my body.
- I am dining with Susan Karda, Kevin and Xenia O’Brien and Paul Martin – Jo Harwood.
- I am connecting with an estate lawyer to ensure our family’s will is designed this summer.
- I am reviewing my goals monthly.
It’s 40% through 2016, but I am 100% committed to completing my goals. I am working in the now so that my goals are in the present tense and affirmative. I will continually review, work on and assess my goals to ensure they are still relevant and thoughtful.
Anything I’ve missed?

8 年I find that the process of reviewing one's goals is often more beneficial than actual goal attainment --- planning is more important than the plan... Dave Matthews in Vancouver last year was a great show - but it could have been much better. I found Rogers Arena to be less than perfect for their music. Every year I tell my wife we have to see DMB at the Gorge, and every year we decide to wait until the "kids are older". #procrastination. Duran Duran should be loads of fun - #nostalgic. I decided to forego Hip tickets --- I find it hard to imagine enjoying a show when you know how tragic it is (no pun intended). Looking forward to 100% report :)

8 年Great goals reminder! I have a good Will guy too if you're looking at options... I'm going through that process right now.

8 年Thank you for sharing this list Brenda! I've been struggling with a new goals list since I've crossed so many of my own from when I was in my 20's, and for a while have been asking myself, 'now what?'. I see I need to put some real effort into establishing new ones and outlining some details for them. You've inspired me to attack them again! :)
