Have you ever been in an interview and you just knew that you didn't get the job because either you were talking in circles, or you just couldn't think of great examples to give and you basically fumbled the bag.
Well that happened to me once and I vowed to never let it happen again!! Period.
Here's 4 ways you can stand out in your interview.
- Have a Portfolio: You maybe thinking, I barely have experience, what am I even going to put in a portfolio. Well friend let me tell you! You can put relevant classes/courses in your portfolio, assignments/projects that directly relate to the position and any awards/accolades you've received for your work. Think outside the box, this is your chance to physically show your future employer what you can do.
- Research Research Research: This is sooo important. When you're in an interview you want to make sure you connect with the hiring manager/team, and to connect you have to know the organization and what they want. Make sure you browse their LinkedIn as well as some of the employees LinkedIn accounts.
- Be ready for a STAR interview: Many organizations are asking STAR Interview Questions, which are basically questions like "Can you detail a mistake you made and how you reacted to it?" or "Tell us about a time where you performed well under enormous pressure?" Sound familiar....good! Well you want to make sure that you are telling them everything they want, starting with the SITUATION, TASK, ACTION & RESULT (STAR). Come up with at least 3 good stories to tell and make sure you practice them to get all the STAR elements in them.
- Practice Practice Practice: This is so important, so listen up! DO MOCK INTERVIEWS! I can't stress enough how much easier it makes your interview go and how much more comfortable you feel after practicing.
