1. Non-Verbal Communication

One of the best ways you can become more confident in your communication is by mastering non-verbal communication .??

Before you speak, consider the following ways to elevate your engagement:

  • Posture - How you stand or sit will make a big difference in how you are perceived.
  • Eye Contact - Have you ever chatted with someone who refused to make eye contact with you??It's a little unsettling, isn't it??Make sure you are making eye contact with your audience.
  • Hand Gestures - How are you using intentional gestures when you speak??Oftentimes, if you aren't confident about what you are saying, you will stiffen up or keep your hands to your sides. You'll appear more confident if you use confident gestures.?

2. Effective Speaking

It's important to use effective communication strategies when you are speaking.?Is your message being received the way you intend??Be mindful of these areas:

  • Clear -?You aren't using too many words, or "beating around the bush". You are direct and to the point.

  • Examples - This means you are using examples to back up your ideas or your directions. You don't leave your audience guessing or being speculative.
  • Logical - Your communication makes logical sense. What you are communicating is coherent.?It makes sense to anyone listening.
  • Concise - When you are communicating effectively, you remove extra words, filler words, or images.?Hint: speak slower to achieve this!
  • Distributed - When communicating, make sure your message is distributed in a timely manner so everyone is in the loop. This is even more important when emailing, or recording a video.??

??We recommend the e-course?"Speaking Confidently And Effectively" to help you learn how to speak more effectively.

3. Listening

Listening is an important skill to learn if you want to be a more confident communicator.?

There are several ways you can practice boosting your listening skills:

  • Don't interrupt -?As you listen to the person speaking, wait for a pause before you interject.?Don't interrupt them mid-sentence or before they are finished.
  • Ask clarifying questions -?Being able to ask smart questions based on what the speaker was saying shows you're listening.?Asking a clarifying question shows you're putting thought into your question.
  • Visualize what the speaker is saying - If the speaker is telling a story, visualize it in your head.?This will help you remember what they are saying and also empathize with them.
  • Limit distractions - Put your phone away! If you want to show that you are confident in communicating, don't be a rude audience member.?Showcase your executive presence by giving the person speaking your undivided attention.

An important part of listening is being able to empathize with the speaker.?This is part of emotional intelligence or EQ.?Emotional intelligence: the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships with empathy.?What does that have to do with powerful communication??

The more emotionally intelligent you become, the more powerful you will be at communicating.

If you are a powerful communicator, you are a confident communicator.?So practicing your listening skills.?
