Wellness, as defined by Merriam Webster: the quality or state of being in good health especially as an actively sought goal ; lifestyles that promote wellness.
I think most professionals today would say that work/life balance is always difficult to manage, but when you throw WELLNESS into the mix, it’s like putting your life into challenge mode. How do you have a career, enjoy your social life, and still manage to live a lifestyle that promotes good health?
Those of us in the meetings industry are well-accustomed to the three-meals-and-two-snacks that have become the standard for most conferences and conventions. As the meetings industry evolves, though, we’re seeing a greater focus on mindful meals, smart portions, and the incorporation of fitness and movement into programming. Everything from 5ks to meditation breaks are weaving their way into the meeting landscape as the industry tries to navigate WELLNESS as a whole.
I can’t say that I’m an expert by any means, though in the last five years I’ve been able to lower my stress and improve my overall physical health by making small changes (some of which my colleagues still giggle about) that might be helpful for others who are trying to manage a full calendar as well as career goals:
- Calendar reminders: there’s no way I could remember to take my vitamins, floss after lunch, or munch on a protein bar to keep from crashing in the afternoon. I have these on my personal calendar (which yes, accidentally started out on the team’s public calendar).
- Tools within reach: I keep a set of hand weights under my desk, and stress balls in my desk in the office. There’s no way to say you don’t have time if you can multitask. You only need one hand on the phone at a time (or get a headset!)
- Good Snacks: I am a snacker. I love to nibble throughout the day. When I don’t have healthy snacks within reach I immediately go for the vending machine, the starbucks pastry case, or whatever candy dish is sitting around. I started buying bulk boxes of protein or granola bars (some of my favorites are: Think Thin Protein Bars, Clif Bars, Luna Bars, and Quest Bars).
- Buddy System: a few of us in the office are walking buddies. A few times a week, especially when we need a break from a stressful project or report, we’ll find our buddy and take a walk through the Convention Center. It’s a great re-set button!
During crazier days I've been known to have a yoga mat in my office or sit on a fitness ball instead of a chair (which is more comical than practical during long conference calls). I’m not affiliated with any of these brands or products, but they’re ways that I’ve been able to find some workplace wellness. What tips do you have to live lifestyle that promotes wellness?
