4 Tips to Improve Your Presentation Confidence & Outcomes
This?newsletter?gives you those four tips and
additional info on How to Win Clients from an Audience.
Hey Everyone,
“A recent study found that most people’s number one fear is public speaking. It also found their second greatest fear was death. Which means, for most people at a funeral, you’d rather be in the box than delivering the eulogy.”
Thanks, Jerry Seinfeld. The cheque is in the mail.
I want to take you back to 1980 something. Specifically, you’re sitting in my year 7 history class and our student teacher, Miss Hogan, is doing her best not to cry as my class is throwing paper aeroplanes, chattering noisily and totally ignoring her.
In the back of the class, our normal teacher, Mrs?Kelly, is sitting quietly. She’s grading Miss Hogan’s performance.
As each frail syllable stumbled out of Miss Hogan’s mouth, our classroom antics became more heightened because, quite frankly, we were a bunch of asses to this lady who certainly didn’t deserve it.
If I could go back, apologise and hug her, I would. We were all dickheads to her!
Anyhoo, Miss Hogan had a job to do. She needed to teach us about the Eureka Stockade and we weren’t having any of it.
The class ended with Miss Hogan leaving in tears right on the bell and we callous students claimed a victory in the name of adolescent insensitivity. Can you tell I feel ashamed as I type this?
Fast forward three years…
It’s now 1980 something +.
(Honestly, the 80s are a fog to me these days.)
Anyhoo, Miss Hogan has now returned as a fully-fledged English teacher and we are in year 10.
And this new Miss Hogan didn’t take crap from anyone. Not because she was domineering. No. She simply didn’t need to. You see, she’d learned to engage us, manipulate us and soothe us.
She’d learned the subtle arts of persuasive presentations.
There were three years between these two sessions and Miss Hogan had no doubt done much soul searching in the intervening years.
But she’d done four other things as well. She’d…
1.???Done more presentations.
2.???Practiced new techniques.
3.???Learned from her experiences.
4.???Implemented her learnings.
If you want to gain more confidence as a presenter, you may like to do the same.
Try new things. Mix in different techniques. Open with a story. Close with a story. Open with a fact. Close with a fact. Sprinkle facts throughout your presentations. Facilitate instead of presenting. Use your voice in different ways. Debate yourself. Pose a mind-bending question. Say something provocative. Challenge accepted wisdom.
There are thousands of variations of things you can do. Each can add greatly to your?presentation skillset. You’ll find your sweet spot. However, rule number one for becoming more confident when presenting is…
Do More of It.
If you also adopt an experimental attitude before stepping on the stage, you’ll put yourself in an observational mindset and, suddenly, that will also reduce your nerves because you're giving yourself something else to think about.
After the presentation, ask yourself if the new techniques you attempted brought you the reaction you wanted. Tweak or eliminate as required.
Fun Fact…
Every April, Melbourne hosts an international comedy festival.
To test their new material, comedians performing in this festival take their trial shows to Adelaide in March. If the material works there, it makes it to Melbourne in April. If it doesn’t, well… what happens in Adelaide stays in Adelaide.
There are two lessons here…
1.???People at the top of their presentation game experiment with their material.
2.???Comedians treat Adelaide audiences like crash-test dummies.
Winning Clients from an Audience
Specifically, if you want to win clients from a presentation, run your own experiments. What works? What doesn’t?
Eventually, you’ll nut it out.
That’s exactly what I did over 4?– 5?months. It may take you more or less time depending on your starting position, how many presentation opportunities you get, the nature of the presenting techniques you try and a few other variables.
If that’s a little time too consuming or daunting, you could attend one of my courses. If so, you may even want to write a testimonial like the people below.
I’m trying hard not to sound boastful (please?forgive me if I've crossed the line)?but it’s quite clear from their words, their future presentations have been radically altered.
They will never again present in their old style that yielded little or no ROI.
They benefitted from the experimentation I’ve already done and now know the template I use and why it works.
How to Win Clients from an Audience?is not about producing polished presenters. It’s about producing presenters who are willing to follow a template and be themselves in front of an audience.
There is absolutely no selling involved. None. Nada. Zip.
Why? Because I’m a crap salesman!
Instead, I put elements of the knowledge I’ve gained from the trust-building communication training I’m involved in at Deakin University’s School of Medicine and the Victorian Cancer Council into my presentations and the workshop.
The Owners of International Business Growth Radio (IBGR) also requested I gave their announcers similar training when I was their Director of On-Air Talent.

If it’s right for you, register and soon you’ll have another reliable marketing arm for your business like the people below.
Este, Hayley, Trish, Simone and others are all regular business owners who can now use the template in their presentations to generate clients.
And, as Simone indicates below… the persuasive presentation skills she learned are really not that hard.
Trish emphasises the lack of importance of slides. Well done Trish! I recall that was a huge breakthrough for her. Too many presenters become hostages to their slides and wonder why no clients eventuate. Trish has said goodbye to that. YAY!!
Hayley was a marvel! I remember talking with her on the phone after her presentation. She was the happiest human on the planet.
And Este? Well, I think hers speaks for itself.
The training occurs in two parts –
领英推荐
1.???3-hour group session
2.???90-minute personalised 1-2-1 session when we mould the template to your business.
The first session of this presentation skills training has a maximum of 10 participants.
There is 1 per month on the 3rd?Tuesday.
The second session occurs as diaries allow.
I hope all this has been useful.?Bye for now,
Steve.
