Focus on talent density. Hiring many more people may not be right for your company; instead, try to make your company dense with talented people.

Questions every hire. If you’re hiring just to get people into open slots, you’re not going to be getting maximum talent density; push back when it doesn’t feel like a new hire will add talent.

Get the person to the right job. Placing a talented person in a job for which he doesn’t have talent is like spreading butter with a screwdriver; you may need to move current staff around to make sure everyone is in an optimal role.

Understand that you’ll need to pay. If you want the best talent, you’ll have to put down competitive money to get them and keep them; there’s no way around it.
