4 Tips to Enjoy Life More Starting Today

Regardless of where you are in life, you may still be in school, or just starting out on your career path, you may have retired, or are somewhere in between, statistics, surveys, and even the old-fashioned eye-test, lets us know, most people are not enjoying life to the fullest.

I want to share four tips that can help you (or someone you know) start enjoying life more – starting today.

Keep in mind, while we cannot change our destination instantly, we can immediately change our direction, by simply making a different choice.

Here are four tips, four choices, you can choose today, that will put you on course for more enjoyment in your life.

1)???Have fun. Too often, with so many responsibilities, fun is ignored or looked upon as a luxury or an afterthought. Fun is thought of as something you can enjoy after everything is done. You must incorporate fun into your life as a daily necessity not as a luxury. There’s an old saying mentioned in times of turmoil, “One day we’ll look back on this and laugh.” ?Why wait? Laugh now. In every job description I write for organizations, as one of the job requirements, I always list “Sense of Humor.” Why? Because when you work with people, you will experience disappointments. You will be let down. Having a sense of humor will allow you to see the lighter side of things, making it easier to overcome your disappointments.

2)???Start trying. You’ve probably heard someone say, “you have to try harder.” The reality is, quite often, people will give up before they even try. The negative self-talk, the inner dialogue on one’s likely failure or inability to succeed, stops many people from even starting. Instead of being afraid to try and fail, think about what you will lose if you fail? What will you gain? The truth is, if you fail, the only thing you’ve likely lost is the time you’ve invested. What you gain is valuable information that will help you on your second attempt and future attempts. The reality is most people fail at everything on their first attempt. The few who succeed on the first attempt generally end up losing whatever they’ve gained because there were no lessons learned along the way. All winners start as beginners. Spend some time learning about successful people that you admire. You’ll discover their success didn’t come from a one-time big event. Their success was achieved from trying, failing, evaluating, trying, failing, evaluating, over and over, until they achieved their desired results. Most successful people will tell you their biggest success is the person they became in the process, not the end result. Enjoy the process. Let the results take care of themselves.

3)???Simplify your life. Stop being busy to be busy. Too many people fill their lives with busyness as an indicator of their value and/or their achievements. If you want to enjoy life more, stop senseless activities and identify the 3 most important things in your life and focus on them. If you have more than 3 priorities, you don’t have any priorities. To enjoy life more, you need more fulfillment, not more activities. Fulfillment comes from achievement. Achievement comes from narrowed focus. Stop saying yes to so many things. Say no more so you can accomplish more.

4)???Choose people over things. People are literally working and/or driving themselves to death for things. Highways are full of commuters every morning and evening, long before the workday starts and long after it ends, with people sacrificing for larger homes, nicer cars, the Rolex watch, the diamond necklace, and more. People are more important than things. At the end of life, people don’t wish they’d had a nicer set of gold clubs, or a bigger vacation home. They wish they had spent more time with their children or had better relationships with their significant other. Children today would be better off having dinner with both parents living in an apartment than eating alone in a big house while Mom and Dad are commuting in traffic. Today, more couples are choosing not to have children so they can focus on their careers. At the end of life, people never wish they had attended more meetings or wish they’d had acquired more things. At the end of life, most regrets center on relationships. Why? Because people are more important than things. The earlier this is realized, the more one can enjoy life.

Remember, there is greatness within you. You have to choose greatness. It won’t develop on its own. I believe in you!

“The quality of your life is equal to the quality of your relationships.”
