Are you trying to break into the tech industry?
In the past few weeks, we have been asked frequently by those starting out, for advice on how to get into a start-up tech position. We know this can be daunting with the industry being so vast, so we’ve put together 4 top tips to help you find your new job.
Portfolio
Due to Covid-19, you may have found it difficult to find relevant experience in the field. If this is you, building your own portfolio is a great way to combat this. For example, if you want to get into building websites, why not make a few interactive landing pages and website mock-ups to show a potential employer all the skills you have. The more professional and cohesive, the better. However, keep in mind all the skills you want to show off.
Up-skilling
Wherever there’s an opportunity to up-skill yourself, it’s well-worth doing so! You want to stand out from the crowd and help your potential employer understand how you can use your skills in a variety of ways. To continue up-skilling, there are plenty of online resources with many universities now offering specific tech-related courses too.

Networking
If you have little connections in the tech world, you may find it challenging to know where to go for advice. Asking professionals for advice will give you greater understanding of the industry. A great place to do this is LinkedIn, your profile can act as a sample CV, and anyone can see all the skills you have. Make sure your LinkedIn shouts what opportunities you are seeking, and you have your open-to-work settings on.
What does your future look like?
Try and discover your niche, what part of tech do you enjoy? – whether that's industry or skill related.
Think about your job preferences, whether hybrid, remote or in-house.
When starting out we’d recommend hybrid or in-house as you can pick up lots of valuable skills and information from the people around you.
Set yourself realistic goals, chances are you’re more likely to work for a smaller company whilst starting out, than for a world-leading co-operation. What would you like to achieve in X amount of time? What are your salary expectations?
Looking for your foot in the door can be challenging but try and remember the end goal.
