4 Tips for Asking for Time Off at a New Job

When you have a new job, the last thing you want to do is ask for something out of the ordinary or that might lead to a perception that you're less than your best. Unfortunately, sometimes, you don't have a choice. You've had a family vacation scheduled for months. You have an ongoing commitment at a specific time every week, and you can't be at work during that time. Whatever it is, you need to be able to ask for time off work the right way. Try some of these tips to make it easier.?

Tell your employer as soon as possible. Don't let fear drive you to wait until the last possible moment to ask for your time off. Instead, go ahead and notify them that you'll need the time as soon as you know. This will both make it more likely that you'll get the time and decrease stress at the office as a result of your request.?

Choose the right time. If you're getting ready to schedule a family vacation, ask your boss when the most convenient time to plan your trip would be. The last thing you want is to be out of the office when it's at its busiest--especially since that might lead to working while you're supposed to be relaxing on vacation! Instead, have a conversation about the busiest season versus the most convenient time to take off.?

Know the company culture. In some companies, it's fine to ask for an extra day off within a month or two of starting the job--especially in small startups that use extra vacation time to make up for low pay. On the other hand, if you're working in a fast-paced office environment where vacation time is closely guarded, you should try to wait a few months to ask for vacation time, if you can.?

Be honest. There's a big difference between asking for a few hours off for a doctor's appointment or needing a day to handle a family emergency and simply wanting to take a long weekend at the beach. When you're honest and forthright with your employer, you'll be more likely to get the time off you need.

Asking for time off can be scary, especially if you're new to the job--but it doesn't have to prevent you from getting the time you need to handle life tasks. Following these simple tips can make it easier to get your time off without rocking the boat or giving the wrong impression to your new employer.?
