Everything is impermanent; the nature of life is change. Our power then lies in how we respond, learn, and adapt to the unwanted change that will come into our life experience.
Change is part of our lives; sometimes we seek it, sometimes it just comes to shake our world in undesirable ways. When we seek a change, we are open to it, and we embrace it; we celebrate it!
When unwanted change comes, which feels that a rug has been pulled underneath our feet, we fear the unknown. It makes us feel worried or anxious about the future.
So, if change is part of our journey in this life, when unwanted change comes learning how to maintain composure becomes essential. It will allow us to respond to the change we experience in a proactively and productive matter.
What I am sharing with you in this article, is based on my own experience and what I have learned, and continue learning, through the changes in my life.
I have lived in two countries outside of my native Colombia. I have switched my career to a new industry. I started a new business after being downsized. I experienced the unwanted ending of romantic relationships. I had physical injuries that prevented me for months of exercising fully. And now, I can add, the change in my business and life due to covid.
My intention today is to provide you with 4 things you can do to best manage undesirable change in your life.
1- Give it a new perspective: Every change we experience opens an opportunity for us to learn and open space for new ways to know ourselves and have new experiences in our lives.
2- Focus on what you can control: The only thing we can control is ourselves and our response to our circumstances. We cannot control anything outside of ourselves.
3- Accept what you are experiencing: The tendency is to resist our experience and seek to control the outside world to feel good again. Accepting where we are will open space to start responding and managing our new reality and seeing new possibilities.
4- Direct your mind: Guide your mind to the present moment when you notice that you are worried or anxious; root yourself in your breath for 5 minutes. This will help you to bring ease to the moment and calm your nervous system. Once you feel more tranquil, ask yourself, what can I control? What can I learn from this? What opportunities can I open for myself? What is good in this situation?
Remember, each of us has the power to give meaning to our circumstances and not allow ourselves to become a victim of unwanted change. We have control over our perspective and embrace the change we experience as an opportunity for our growth and evolution. We can allow ourselves to be guided.
