4 Things to Consider in a Nepotism Policy
Nepotism. You’ve seen it plenty of times at your job. Your boss will hire some family or friend, and you think it's completely wrong. But do you truly know if it was pure nepotism, or an actual, thoughtful decision in hiring these people?
When considering a friend or family member as a potential employee, employers must consider the following questions to avoid hiring for the sake of nepotism:
- Who is considered an employee’s family member or relative?
Make a very clear definition for this, and where to draw the line on family.
- What is the line of authority and will new employees follow that line?
Does this new employee have the same opportunities for growth and promotion?
- How is supervisor defined?
Can the new employee be placed in a position that doesn’t offer any special treatment from any family member with supervising authority?
- What if two existing employees wish to get married?
Will the two be violating policy if they do?
Employers should consider each question carefully when drafting a nepotism policy. Doing so will protect both them and their employees in these future situations. For more information, go to guralnicklegal.com/employment-law/
