4 Steps to Adopt Generative AI NOW

4 Steps to Adopt Generative AI NOW

We are in exciting times!

ChatGPT just accomplished a remarkable feat, acquiring 100 million users in sixty days, making ChatGPT the fastest-growing software application in history. Yesterday evening, Satya Nadella added more fuel to the fire by announcing (07-Feb-2023) the release of ChatGPT with Bing Search and Edge browser. The generative AI explosion demonstrates AI's tremendous potential in transforming various industries and the willingness of individuals, workers, and operators to adopt it. Now.

That is not all; big news for Enterprise AI - Thomas M. Siebel , Kemal Koeksal & Nikhil Krishnan of C3.ai announced Generative AI for the enterprise. Heralding a fundamental change to enterprise software. Has lightning struck twice, and Tom Siebel just created an entirely new technology sector? Yes.

Bill Gates chimed in on many of the Generative AI issues earlier this week. Bill thinks we face disruptive forces even more significantly than social networking disruptions were ten years ago. Bil; believes there will be a positive short-term impact on productivity, but there is a worry about the "Control Issue." What if people controlling AI take it in the wrong direction? What if humans lose control? What does that mean?

AI is Here - we are at the beginning of the beginning.

AI is already excelling in business and industrial applications such as customer service, predictive maintenance, fraud detection, supply chain optimisation, emissions reduction, and ESG by analysing vast amounts of data (Volitile Big Data) - something difficult to cover with legacy first principle applications efficiently. Generative AI will combine AI insight with the ease of Google search, which everyone from the top floor to the shop floor can use.

From comments made my Linkedin newsletter, AI for the People, and hundreds of conversations I had with enterprise customers and prospects, I see how enterprise thinking about AI is divided into three "camps"—Skynet, Laissez Faire, and Cobots.

Camp 1 – Skynet

The analogy to Skynet from the Terminator movies serves as a cautionary tale for those who believe that we must be mindful of the potential harm that AI could cause if not properly regulated. This group fears AI being unleashed without clear guardrails and rules. They believe that before the widespread proliferation of AI, we must thoroughly understand the risks and take steps to mitigate them. We see them retrenching into legacy solutions and spinning cycles about AI's inability to meet current 1st principle solutions.

However, the advent of large language models such as ChatGPT and the release of similar products from Google and other tech giants make it clear that the genie is out of the bottle, and the proliferation of AI is inevitable. As the number of users grows, it becomes increasingly difficult to control and regulate the technology in current corporate IT.

For you "Skynet-ers," I have included Bernard Marr article on ChatGPT and Security. Excellent read, no matter which AI camp you are in.

Camp 2 – Laissez Faire

The Laissez Faire Camp is by far the largest group. They have adopted a passive stance and are observing the developments in AI before making decisions about its use in their enterprise. However, in the face of such rapid changes, this approach may be a step backward. A recent report from NewVenture Partners found that a disappointingly low percentage of executives use data and analytics to drive their business strategies. The number has declined from 47% to 40% in the last four years.

AI projects are popping up like mushrooms throughout Enterprises without transparent data governance or policy. There is a growing reliance on large external language models and open-source deep neural network models (Huggingface, Kaggle, etc.). While this may assist some workers in improving individual productivity, Laissez Faire does not leverage the power of enterprise to use its data as a competitive tool.

The Laissez Faire "camp" is waiting for its vendors to develop strategies for them and see how their users organically use generative AI. Without a straightforward strategy, this group will always be chasing its tail as more and more waves of generative are unleashed. ChatGPT is not an outlier; yesterday, 谷歌 announced Bard, its rival to ChatGPT. Below is a link to five ChatGPT Alternatives.

Camp 3 – Cobots

The Cobots Camp is the smallest of the three but the fastest-growing group. They are embracing the philosophy of human-assisted AI, where the technology is viewed as a tool that can enhance and amplify human capabilities. ?The focus is on human–machine collaboration, as AI has the potential to make tremendous improvements in areas such as reporting, alerts, asset maintenance, and safety. The key to success is to keep humans in the loop and ensure that the technology is being used to augment rather than replace human decision-making.

C3.ai's latest release shows the power of leveraging AI to fundamentally change the human–computer interaction model with AI. Everyone knows how to Google something when they want to order a pizza or sushi. C3.ai can now bring this same ease of use and visibility across the entire enterprise.

Google, Microsoft, and others will be spending billions on generative AI, so we are in the previews before the main attraction even starts. No matter which camp you are in, the explosion of AI and AI tools is already here and will be accelerating. Companies that shirk their responsibility to adopt AI responsibly will not be the dominant players and employers in the next five years.

Four Key Elements of Enterprise AI success

While individuals are adopting AI at a breakneck pace, enterprises still struggle to implement and adopt AI projects. McKinsey reports that nearly 70% of AI pilots fail to convert into production solutions. Depending on which AI Camp you are in, companies can no longer go about AI in half measures and siloed projects.

One hundred million people have voted. They want AI that provides solutions now and gives them vital information at their fingertips. Successful AI projects and programs have four critical elements:

1. Emphasize Culture Change Management: Building an AI-Assist Mentality from CEO down. A survey among my LinkedIn followers revealed that 66% of the respondents identified a lack of leadership vision as the primary challenge in adopting AI.

To drive leadership, companies must focus on developing data literacy and changing the mindsets of senior management toward AI. The CEO must take AI as a core strategic pillar of the business and promote AI leaders' to management roles outside of traditional AI and Data silos. AI strategic commitment has to be in the CEO's letter in the annual report. There must be a clear roadmap on how AI will be leveraged across the enterprise for every position.

2. Focus on Explainable AI Projects: Organizations must concentrate on projects that involve supervised and unsupervised learning, providing evidence packages that allow business owners and operators to understand the reasoning behind AI recommendations. While we all ramp up on large language models, bringing in human-guided and autonomous (supervised and unsupervised) AI projects with explainable service packets is crucial.? We need to be able to share and confirm with users and operators why AI is making a recommendation or predicting a fault. ?Early in adopting an AI project or transformation, users must understand why an AI algorithm is making the recommendations.???

3. Foster Strong Business Partnerships: Successful data leaders must seamlessly integrate into the organization's operations and communicate in a language that resonates with business leaders. Data leaders can build trust with their colleagues and work together to deliver data, analytics, and AI capabilities that drive tangible business results, successful outcomes, and customer satisfaction.

The business needs to be both brought in and bought in. There needs to be a deep focus on how AI can improve the overall experience for employees and not be an additional screen, interface, or surveillance tool.

4. Prioritize Trust: Adopting a data-driven culture should be viewed as improving operations and not just a cost-cutting measure. Emphasizing the positive impact of data-driven decision-making can help build trust in AI-assisted processes, leading to greater adoption and success. CEOs and leaders must drive training and workshops across the business to make traditional employees comfortable.

Conclusions

As with Social Media and the pandemic, businesses with digital services strategy at the core of their operations are better positioned to take advantage of these enormous changes. Employee productivity, employee creativity, and shop-floor to top-floor insight will explode. The technology is out there and is just a few clicks away.

Generative AI will marry the power of AI insight with the ease of search. It will be companies focusing on culture change management, explainable AI projects, strong business partnerships, and prioritizing trust that will build a natural competitive advantage of AI.

Watch this last video from Tom yesterday. It is hard not to get excited about Generative AI for business.
