4 Skills Needed to Succeed in Sports Marketing
How a college student felt more comfortable in their career focus while toning up these skills.
Success is something that everyone wants but it is not obvious on what you need to do to become successful. Sports Marketing is an area where a little bit of all business can mix at times which makes it important to brush up on these things mentioned later. My process to find the skills necessary started recently. However, I did a lot of research on many other successful businessmen and women in the same area of focus.
To save you some time on having to go do days of research like I did I will be giving out all the knowledge accumulated from these successful people and their tips. In this area of work, you can work for sports teams all around the world to promoting and selling
So, what skills do you need to succeed in Sports Marketing?
Here they are:
Communication
Communication is first on this list for me for man different reasons. The first reason is because of the amount of people you will come into contact with whether that be selling a product/experience or collaborating with your marketing team to come up with the best way to reach that target audience for that new product. Many people struggle with communication due to things such as fear of public speaking or just being self-oriented when it comes to group work.
I had a small problem with speaking in front of people, so I decided to attack that fear and take public speaking which helped me more than I ever imagined. The other aspect I hated even more was working with people on group projects. It was a problem for me because I felt that doing it my way and having 100% control makes everything easier. However, I learned that was untrue when it came to areas I wasn't knowledgeable in which leads me to the next important thing.
Teamwork
The teamwork aspect is important because in almost all careers you will, at one point or another, work with someone other than yourself. Some look at it as good and others not so much. I was one who hated it because I often found myself doing all the work. Once I progressed in my major there were others who were there to help which changed my idea on collaboration.
Not only did it help but it was necessary because collaborating with people on different career paths can become more valuable than you think. This transfer to real jobs also due to everybody having a different outlook and experiences leading up to that one project.
Managing Tasks
Coordination, promoting, budget planning, having meetings with merchandise and sports organizations, and planning events are just some of the things on a sports marketer’s plate. Tasks such as these always need to be well planned for and well thought about before any action is done.
The best advice the experts say to do is use a board or planner that keeps your thoughts and required dates in mind. Starting projects right when you get them is extremely important because it allows for time to create backup plans/accommodate the consumer seeing how people change their minds often and so do plans.
Understanding Goals
You always must be thinking about the business aspect and how it meshes with sports. As a team/firm, individuals need to know exactly what the company is doing and why they are doing it. For example, imagine going to school and class every day and not knowing why you're doing it. It simply wastes your time and results in you not getting any knowledge to better yourself. The same is relevant when working in sports marketing. Strategy will always change depending on your goals or the goals of your client.
This goes hand in hand with knowing each team member and their strengths/weaknesses.
Conclusion
These skills are very necessary, and it is okay if you do not possess them all right away. Challenging yourself by getting out of your comfort zone is one step in the right direction that helps a ton. We see growth when pushed past the known areas in life. Again, if you can communicate, are good/willing to have teamwork, manage tasks in timely fashion, and understand goals of your target, sports marketing could be an area you look at!
