A few months ago, I wrapped up my biggest one-off project for $15,000.
But before I show you the juicy stuff, make sure you subscribe to my LinkedIn newsletter – The Copy Titan's Digital Lab – to receive high-level tips like the ones in this article.
Alright, let's dive into the 4 simple yet crucial lessons from this project.
1. Set Firm Boundaries From The Very Beginning
The client sent me a contract, which had a few things that bothered me.
So, with the help of my wife (who is a lawyer), we sent the client a slightly revised version of the contract...
Where they had to pay within 7 business days of me delivering the first draft of every deliverable.
This was important because some clients might protract paying you for months because they're slow in reviewing your copy.
While they may have their reasons, it's not fair for you to wait on a big chunk of money because they can't get their shieet together.
2. Ask For An Upfront Payment
That was a fairly big project, so I was fine with 50% upfront and 50% upon delivery.
But I made sure to include that in the contract, too.
It's NEVER a good idea to be working without any money upfront.
Let alone for a $15,000+ project.
3. Discuss Your Ideas With the Client In Advance
This was actually a request by the company.
But even if they didn't request it, I'd still have done it.
Why?
Because it's much better (and easier) to adjust your copy before you've written most of it.
So, I'd strongly encourage you to always run your ideas for mechanisms/angles/leads/hooks by the client BEFORE you've started doing the work.

Otherwise, you risk needing to change a lot of stuff later on.
4. Be Accommodating
The client asked me to adjust a few things here and there after the project was over.
Which they could have easily done themselves.
But instead of getting annoyed, I decided to go ahead and action those things.
Altogether, it took me less than 40 minutes to introduce the changes.
Obviously, if they wanted me to do a lot more extra work, I'd have told them it was outside of the project's scope.
But I believe spending a few extra minutes left a good impression of me.
And the client would be happy to rehire me in the future.
Well, these were my 4 simple yet crucial lessons from a $15,000 project.
I hope you've got some golden nuggets from them.
