4 Simple Steps to Manage Your Digital Footprint After Death
What would happen to your digital footprint, including your social media accounts, if you died today? Our Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn profiles, and other digital assets don’t just disappear—they continue to exist, which can create unexpected challenges for those we leave behind. While we won’t be here to manage them, do we really want to burden our loved ones with these details??
In this week's episode of The Social Media Takeaway (available on all the leading podcast platforms including iTunes and Spotify ), I’m joined by Niki Weiss, Digital Thanatologist , founder of ENDevo, and creator of My Final Playbook. We talk through practical steps you can take to secure your Facebook, LinkedIn, and other online profiles, ensuring your digital assets are protected and reducing the load on your loved ones.?
Here are Niki’s key takeaways:?
1. Plan Your Social Media Legacy: Niki emphasised how important it is to think ahead about what will happen to your social media accounts, like Facebook and LinkedIn, after you’re gone. I couldn’t agree more. By setting up a plan now, you can ensure your profiles are managed or memorialised exactly the way you want, giving peace of mind to yourself and, more importantly, to your loved ones. We spend so much of our lives online, so it makes sense to take a few simple steps to make sure everything is handled properly.
2. Set Up Legacy Contacts: Facebook offers the option to set up legacy contacts—trusted people who can handle your accounts if something happens to you. On Facebook, this could mean memorialising your profile, managing posts, or even deleting the account. Apple’s feature lets you give someone access to your data, like photos and documents. Niki’s advice? Set this up now, and make sure your chosen contacts know what to do, so your digital presence is taken care of just the way you want.
3. Protect Against Account Hacking: Niki and I discussed the risk of hackers taking over inactive social media profiles of people who have passed away, which Niki referred to as "zombie accounts." These accounts can be especially vulnerable if they’re linked to ad accounts, as hackers might misuse them to run unauthorised ads, leading to unexpected charges. Without a plan, this can cause distress to loved ones left to handle the fallout. Setting up features like legacy contacts or providing clear instructions on how to manage or close your accounts can help prevent this. It’s unsettling to think about, but taking a few steps now can make a big difference in keeping your digital presence safe and secure.
4. Create a "Final Playbook" for Social Media: Niki recommended putting together a "final playbook" with clear instructions on managing all aspects of your affairs including your digital footprint and social media accounts. I think this is such a smart idea—it ensures your loved ones won’t be left guessing about what to do with your profiles. Whether you’d prefer to keep them active, memorialise them, or have them deleted, having a detailed plan makes it easy for those you care about to follow your wishes without any added stress.
The main goal is to make things easier for those you leave behind. I hope this episode has encouraged you to think about your digital legacy and the simple steps you can take to protect it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

It’s reported that Instagram is close to launching a new feature to make it easier for people to WhatsApp you from an Instagram Story. Instagram Notes: A Simple Way to Keep Your Audience in the Loop
Have you ever wanted to share a quick update or thought with your followers, but without making a full post or Story? That’s where Instagram’s Notes feature comes in. Introduced in December 2022, Notes let you share short text updates that appear at the top of your followers’ direct message (DM) inbox and on your profile. You can choose to share your Note with all followers who follow you back or just your Close Friends list, and it disappears after 24 hours.
This feature is perfect for sharing quick updates, asking a question, or even letting your audience know who you’re collaborating with. For example, if you’re featuring a guest on your podcast or launching a new project with a partner, a Note can be a casual, easy way to give them a shoutout and get your followers excited. It’s also a great tool to encourage engagement; your followers can reply directly to the Note, leading to conversations in your DMs.
You can also now add Notes directly to your posts and Reels, making it simple to share thoughts or updates about the content you’re both engaging with. To leave a Note on a post or Reel, just tap the paper plane icon, then select ‘Add Note.’ From there, choose who you’d like to share it with!?
