4 Simple Rules for Better LinkedIn Content

4 Simple Rules for Better LinkedIn Content

You could spend years mastering the strategies, techniques, and nuances of great content creation.

Or you could just use this checklist.

Now, I’m not saying this will turn you into an A-list copywriter. But these are hard-learned shortcuts I’ve picked up over 4 years of almost daily content creation.

If you follow these tips, your posts will be easier to read and more engaging than 99% of what’s clogging up your niche’s feed.

Ready to dive in? Here we go! ??

1?? Start with Your Reader

Before you write a single word, ask yourself: “Who am I talking to?”

If Monica says it, you know it’s serious.

Tattoo this question on your heart and soul. No joke—this is the foundation of EVERY piece of content you create.

Picture your reader as a real person with hopes and dreams they’re striving for, and fears and frustrations they’re trying to avoid.

Now, write to that person.

2?? Write at a 6th-Grade Reading Level (or Lower)

If you want your posts to get read, make them easy to read.

Think about your audience: for many of you, your readers are likely non-native English speakers.

They might be scrolling on their phone, busy, and pressed for time.

By writing at a grade 6 reading level, you make your copy easy-breezy to consume.

The free tool I use to keep my writing simple? (Nope, it’s not ChatGPT)

It's Hemingway.

This app helps me streamline my writing by cutting down on the passive voice, adverbs, and overly complex words.

All those little changes make a big difference in readability.

I used Hemingway to simplify this very article… a bit meta, right?

3?? Write with Emotion (and Have Fun!)

Bring emotion into your writing—don’t hold back.

Make your reader laugh, nod, or even pound their fist on the desk.

A client of mine, Maria, is a great example of this. She recently injected her love of Bon Jovi into a post about how the volume of your voice can impact your confidence.

And yes, the post crushed it (Bon Jovi fans will get that reference).

When I write, I get myself into an emotional state so my energy transfers into my content.

Posts that crackle with emotion are far more engaging.

Think of it like teaching, coaching, or public speaking:

if you feel something while sharing, your audience will feel it too.

4?? Ask for Action

The goal of every post is to encourage your reader to do something: leave a comment, click a link, check out a lead magnet, or send you a DM.

It’s asking for this action that will ultimately grow your business.

To make your ask more effective:

  • Use the active voice to keep it direct and clear.
  • Ask for only one action per post to avoid overwhelming your reader.

Here’s what I mean:

? Weak Call To Action: "Feel free to take a look at the link if you're interested."

? Stronger Call To Action: "Download your free job interview guide here."

Extra Tip: Add an extra sentence after your CTA that lets readers know what will happen when they take that action. This removes uncertainty, builds trust, and encourages follow-through.

Example:

"Simply click the link, enter your best email, and I’ll send it straight over—no strings attached."

When your reader knows exactly what to expect, they’re more likely to take action.

Make sure your CTAs are more direct routes than Uber driver 'shortcuts'.

?? Bonus: Read Your Post Aloud

Before you hit “post,” read your content out loud. Or better yet, ask someone else to read it.

Does it sound like the way you talk? Is it conversational?

If not, rewrite it until it does.

Use short sentences, simple words, and one idea per sentence.

Simplify, simplify, simplify.

Delete every fancy sentence that makes you feel smart… even if it makes your university professors shed a tear.

Okey doke. That's all I've got for you today...

I hope these tips will make your posts stronger, more engaging, and (hopefully) more profitable.

I’m off to the airport now—I’ve got a flight back to Ireland to catch.
