4 secret steps to connected communication

4 secret steps to connected communication

Ever wondered why some people seem to effortlessly connect and inspire, while others struggle to get their message across? ???

Here's a little secret: It’s all about connected communication. ????

Think about it. Have you ever been in a meeting where someone’s words just clicked? Or read an email that made you feel understood and valued? That’s the magic of effective and connected communication. And guess what? It’s a skill you can master too!?????

Story time… A few years ago, I coached a leader who was brilliant but struggled with team engagement. His emails were clear but lacked warmth. His meetings were efficient but felt transactional. We worked on one simple thing: making his communication more human.?????

We started with small changes. He began his emails with a friendly greeting, shared a bit about his day, and asked about his team’s well-being. In meetings, he made eye contact, listened actively, and acknowledged everyone’s input.?????

Initially he struggled with the habits as he felt they were a waste of time. We had to actually create measurements to show him that fewer email clarifications were required. And people filled out a survey before and after to rate him on his communication. Only the numbers convinced him. His team felt more connected, motivated, and engaged. He doubled down and the transformation was incredible.?????

Here’s what he wants you to take away from his experience:??

1. Be Authentic: People connect with real, not perfect. Share your thoughts and feelings genuinely.??

2. Listen More: Communication is a two-way street. Slow down and show that you value others’ opinions.??

3. Show Empathy: Understand and acknowledge others’ perspectives and emotions. Make them feel heard and understood.??

4. Show You Care: Take the time to ask about the person, not just the work.??

Good communication isn’t just about talking; it’s about connecting. It’s about making others feel seen, heard, and valued. And the best part? It’s a skill you can develop with practice.?????

It is one of the skills you will learn in The Connected Leader Course. Good news, the fall cohort is now open! I have an early bird special just for my readers. Save $300 with the code “EB300”.?????

If you want to start small, here’s my challenge for you: Next time you communicate, whether it’s an email, a meeting, or a casual chat, try to be a little more human. Notice the difference it makes.?????

We are products of our environment and experiences, Michelle, and your client likely wasn't raised that way and lacked any natural inclination to be so. Regardless, as your client demonstrated, such behaviors are also learned, and when learned well, can be productive.
