4 sales skills I’ve used to close millions → you had no idea you needed...

“These 8 AI tools will increase your revenue by 300% in the next 3 months”

Shut

The

F*ck

Up.

Seriously.?

The reason you’re not selling isn’t because of a lack of AI tools.?

(I didn’t even get a CRM till 6 weeks ago and we were still doing $80k months)

It’s because most don’t execute the basic fundamentals.?

It’s why won’t ever hear sales legends like John Barrows or Belal Batrawy ever talk about AI tools.

And you know why?

Because it doesn’t f*cking matter?

If you don’t know the basics (like 99.99% of “social sellers” on LinkedIn)

Then you’ll throw your money down the drain → wondering why you haven’t hit your first $10k month like they promised.?

And that’s why we’re here today…

For me to teach you the 4 skills you need to know → so you can start making money on LinkedIn.

Instead of that fake dopamine money you get by “supporting” the community

Which in reality is only stroking the egos of big creators helping pump their engagement pyramid scheme.

Ok I may have taken it a bit far there lol → but you get what I mean.?

I’m passionate about trying to help everyone make money on LinkedIn who wants to.

So here are the 4 sales skills you must have to make money on LinkedIn → that you probably had no idea you needed…

Absolute Conviction

If I could only have one selling skill for the rest of my life, this would be it.?

Now the only reason I’m using this example here is because it perfectly illustrates my point

And it’s something I’ve thought about for a very long time.?

There is no agenda whatsoever here other than helping you make money on LinkedIn.?

Ok now that the disclaimer is out of the way → let’s continue?

Some of the best sales people in the world are church goers.?

See I grew up Christian and went to church every Sunday?

The kind of church where people sang together, got prayed and was a great community.?

This was my life for 16 years and know it very well.

And upon reflecting throughout my 7 year sales journey → I’ve realised something…

My church was a sales machine.

It’s not simply selling a $99 Oodie

With clever copy causing an impulse buy.

No

It’s fundamentally selling you a complete life transformation?

Something that Jordan Belford would only dream of being able to sell.?

(Also side rant -> that guy is a f*cking assh*le who preyed on low income families for years extorting their life savings crippling their lives. Yet somehow is now “glorified” as a sales legend because of his “skill” that he picked up from years of maliciously ruining good people’s lives. Will Smith’s reputation got ruined for one stuff up and this guy somehow lives on. I don’t know whether I call this ironic or moronic but ahhhh rant over for now)?

Here’s how the our church’s sales process worked → without anyone consciously realising it.?

When someone was an ideal potential client (ICP)

They would be convinced to come along - Prospecting?

They would then thoroughly enjoy their time - Upfront Value?

They would spend time with other church goers who were interested in their lives - Discovery?

They would be contacted after to see if they would come back - Followup?

They would attend over a few weeks and feel such a sense of belonging and purpose they would become regulars - Closing?

Every church attendee would “sell” their ideal clients in

Without ever reading a sales book, doing a course or having any experience in sales.?

Because they have what most sellers don’t → Absolute Conviction.

If they convinced someone to join -> they were doing the right thing.?

Simple as that.?

So what can we learn from church?

You MUST have absolute conviction in the product or service you’re selling.

And if you don’t then either

→ You lack confidence

→ You service sucks

Which leaves you with only 2 actions?

  1. Talk to more people
  2. Fix your damn service?

Because nothing else matters → unless you have absolute conviction

That your product or service can help the other person.?

This alone is 80% of your sales skill.

And the reason most people don’t have it IMO -> is because deep down they don’t believe they provide enough value.?

Brutal Honesty?

I had a good chat with a client this week who has recently started their own program.

They used to get nervous going into sales meetings -> because they didn’t know what to say if people asked questions like

→ What specific results have people got from your program?

→ What will the specific time investment be until I get my first lead?

→ What exactly can I expect after implementing the 8 week program?

They were nervous about not having answers → as the program just started.?

They asked me

“How can I convince the person to join if I can’t answer their questions. What can I say? I’m super stressed about it”

My answer was simple

“You need to be brutally honest. Tell the person that this is the first time you are running the program. That you have worked with 12x 1-1 clients before and these were the results. But you haven’t done group before so you can’t be sure of the speed of ROI. Then let them know that’s the reason why the program is the price it is. You felt better charging less than you usually would because there will be a couple of hiccups. But you would be happy at any point to get on a call 1-1 with them to work through any issues that they have to ensure they succeed.”

They told one client this and closed them on the call

Over the moon excited to get started.?

They were one of the first people to join this brand new program and were stoked with the discount and that they would get extra attention.?

All it took was being honest ?

You see….?

When we buy high ticket anything

(Think your accountant, mortgage broker or real estate agent)?

It’s not all about price. Sure it’s a factor?

But what matters most is do we?

→ Feel like we know who they are?

→ Do we actually like them as a human?

→ Like we can trust them to do what they say they will?

It’s why nobody trusts those coaching ads on Instagram that go something like this

“We will get you 20 appointments in the first week and if we don’t, we’ll pay you $5k, buy you a trip to Disneyland and send Gordon Ramsay over to your house to cook you a private dining experience for you and 8 friends…”

We care about?

→ Human to human

Not business to business?

H2H → B2B

Because humans are never perfect?

And admitting your faults upfront?

Will disarm your prospects?

Soo much so that they’ll

Be signing the contract

So fast you’ll wonder?

Why no one told?

You about this

Magic trick

Earlier…

Give it a try on your next call and

Let me know when the deal closes….

Now this is the perfect Segway for our next skill which is….

Clear Communication?

Story time!

My wife has been wanting to purchase this new coach for a couple of months now…

“Matthew pleeeeeeeease can we get the coach. I really want it so we can start having people over.? Don’t you think it would be nice if everyone could sit around when we are having pres before going out? It’s only $4,000…..”

(Which is actually surprisingly cheap for a good couch here in Australia)

So even though we purchased the last couch only a year ago?

And the new one is cream white and we have 2 black dogs

I really wanted to go the Black Belt Conference next week in Noosa for 4 days.

So I “caved” and said let’s get it ?

(Also please don’t think that it’s because we are using my money. She doesn’t need any help there and is far more successful than I am)?

She immediately jumped on and ordered it

Expected delivery time → 1 week away

1 week passed….nothing

Another week passed….still nothing?

Yet another week passed….still nothing?

Now my wife was pissed.?

She planned for her girlfriends to come over before the Fred Again concert this week

And the couch wasn’t gonna be there…

I feel sorry for the customer service rep that was on the other end of that phone call lol.

Reputation ruined…

So where did they stuff up?

It’s?

A great price

A great couch

A short wait to get it

(My mate Andy waited 6 mths for his couch)?

They simply didn’t communicate clearly….

If they told my wife it was gonna get there late

She would have planned pres at another one of her girlfriend’s houses.

Instead she had to sit there in shame as two of her girlfriends sat on the ground….

(First world problems I know)?

But still → it doesn’t negate the lesson here.?

So what can you do?

To make sure you don’t?

Make a big boo boo like this?

You need to make sure that at each point of your sales process

From initial reach out → through to closed deal → and delivery of the service?

You always clearly communicate exactly what’s going to happen next.?

And not only next steps

But the next steps of the next steps too.

Because us humans hate unexpected surprises.?

Even if the couch arrives and feels like we’re sitting on gods pillow (I swear that was not deliberate lol)

It will always be overshadowed by the simple lack of Clear Communication and……

(It’s fun doing these Segway things )

Quick Fun Fact: I first learned how to use a Segway like this listening to the Tim Ferris podcast back in 2016. Funny how this stuff sticks with you.?

Expectation Setting?

I have the a great example for this and an even better story to illustrate.?

The example is…

Whenever companies mess with a sales persons commission.?

Seriously.

If you change the expectations of a sales person that might change their earning potential?

RIP to any company that does this. ?

Commission to sales people is sacred?

And something you don’t mess with.?

Don’t believe me? Ask any sales person you know and watch their reaction…

OR?

Read the hypothetical story below…

So there was this sales rep that started working at an up and coming tech company.?

Shortly after they started a new leader came in to replace an OG one that had been there for quite a while.?

And to set the stage → this dude was loved by everyone.?

The sales rep even chatted to him at the Sales Kickoff in 2018.

He saw that the rep and mate didn’t have a beer so

Midway into the convo he excused himself

Walked directly to the front of the line

And brought back a couple of pints.

Nobody even cared that he pushed in → because he was the man.?

Everyone loved him.?

So when he was replaced with the heavy hitter to take over as the company was scaling up

It made total sense → but as you can imagine some people were a bit upset.?

But as we have already gone through?

Us humans don’t particularly like change

But this change isn’t the one I’m talking about…

It was a couple of months into COVID

And the company was exploding.?

All of a sudden every man and his dog needed their software.?

They increased their user base by 50x seemingly overnight.?

Absolute insanity.?

So as you can imagine it was pretty busy

Sales reps were working crazy hours helping get as many people up get and running as they could.

Obliviously it wasn’t totally benevolent → they were earning once in a lifetime commissions doing it.?

So when leaders called an all hands meeting it made total sense.

But what happened on that meeting → is where a slight mistake might have been made.

You see → this was a completely unexpected event which obliviously affected commissions in a way that no body could forecast.?

Now we don’t need to go into specifics?

But to help educate on the hypothetical...

You need to know what a multiplier is.?

For example -> If a sales rep hits 120% of their target?

For that 20% over the 100%?

Sometimes companies don’t only pay commission.

They can get paid 2,3 or 4x the commissions and start making Instagram Dubai Ferrari money lol.

It’s to incentivize over achievers

→ Plus stroke the egos of sales peeps

→ Because the stereotype is true

→ Most have pretty big ones

It was a big boo boo?

So some something had to be done.?

(It’s maybe what you’d call an act of god clause?)

And guess who was part of delivering the news?

The new leader everyone was already on the fence about.

You can guess what happened next lol.

The sales rep was in the office at the time.?

And remembers someone pissed off yelling something out loud along the lines of….you can probably guess.

Now from a logical standpoint?

→ It makes total sense what they did.?

They were simply communicating what was already in place.?

So technically it should it have come as a surprise to anyone.?

Honestly the rep didn’t see the big deal with it?

Everyone was already making bank.

But when you mess with a sales persons expectations → you hit them right where it hurts.?

And it didn’t help that they were already working crazy hours…

This hypothential story is the perfect example?

→ Of expectation setting gone wrong.

If they simply identified and communicated?

→ More clearly the possible differences early on

So that the sales reps knew what might have been coming → honestly they would have been fine.?

They were still crushing it with a once in a lifetime make money from order taking not even selling opportunity.

But that thing up caused ripple effects which are hard to get back.?

So make sure that when you say you are going to do something → that you do it.

And if you can’t do it at least?

→ Clearly communicate why.?

Now I’m not saying that I’m perfect with this by any means → but this is something I’ve been ruthlessly working on lately?

That’s been somewhat of a magic trick when it comes to closing deals.?

Give it a go → I promise you won’t regret it.?

__

Lol I bet when you first started reading this

You thought I was going to talk about?

Persuasion, Copywriting, Prospecting or Sales processes.

Yes these all matter a lot?

And can help you build a pipeline so full in 3 months you’ll be hand locking your clients.

But without the 4 fundamentals → your results will be fleeting.

Sure you can hack your way to revenue through clever copywriting, special offers and crazy guarantees.

But ultimately if you’re missing these 4 skills

You’ll perpetually feel guilty that you’re not doing the right thing by your clients?

And be in a never ending cycle of feast and famine.

Marketing like a maniac one month then

Attempting to deliver on over promises the next.?

And if this sounds like you and you want to make a change?

And you are a coach, consultant, creator, solopreneur or small business owner?

Happy Sunday!

"Absolute Conviction" vs. "Brutal Honesty" - love the breakdown, Matthew! I get the value of transparency, but is there a middle ground for honesty that doesn't scare prospects away? Btw, great post - definitely rethinking my approach!

Those four fundamentals are on point Matt! So many people and businesses ignore some/all of them and wonder why their 'shiny new thing' isn't flying off the shelves.
