4 Reasons Your Audience is Tuning You Out on Social Media

With social media getting more saturated, how you connect and stay relevant for your audience is more important than ever. This is why I'm sharing one of my newsletters from the archives!


It's been a while since we've attended a large dinner party but we all know that feeling when someone is talking and talking, and they've lost their audience.

You have your bestie at the table, and you're likely making eye contact or kicking each other because the talker simply can't read the room.

This can happen on social, and it's tough to know when you're the one who has lost the room when you can't see the faces of the people you're talking to.

But if you feel like you've lost momentum, take a moment to see if you're guilty of any of these slip-ups (I know I have been!):?


  • You're using social media like it's 2018.?Instagram, like all social channels, is all about video, quick wins, and dynamic content. It's not really about gorgeous pictures anymore. They can still be a part of your strategy, but if you're not stepping into these new formats, you're likely losing a ton of potential exposure.

  • ?You can't stop talking about yourself.?Social is SOCIAL. Are you responding to every comment, engaging with your community, highlighting your team, and rewarding your community? Or are you simply trying to sell with every post? Because ...who wants to hang around someone who only talks about themselves?

  • Your bio and your profile pic are boring.?If people find you in a search or stumble across your page, but you don't have a bio that speaks to exactly who you serve, you're losing valuable traffic. Make sure your picture is a clear product pic (unless you're Nike or Lululemon, people aren't going to know what your logo means).

  • You're not having any fun with it.?This is SO important. People spend their spare time on social media to learn, connect, be entertained, and relax. If you are bored, your audience is bored. If you're only trying to sell, they can feel it and trust me; it's the same as being approached on the street for a donation. People are busy and don't want to donate their time to you so you can sell to them. GIVE them something worthy, so they want to follow you.?

Now, if you realize you might be a Chatty Kathy or an Out-Of-Touch Tommy, no worries. Reels and video can take longer, so if you need to post a little less to give your audience the content they want the way they want, that's totally ok!
