I’ve been working within the US space for a while now and I keep coming across candidates that have graduated from coding / data science bootcamps. Some of these candidates have previous degrees from University some do not.
Many of the clients we work with look for potential recruits that have University degrees but I want to look at the pros of hiring a bootcamp graduate.
Intensive
Coding bootcamps generally consist of intensive training, it takes a lot of dedication and hard work for a candidate to complete. I personally think this shows a good work ethic and that the candidate is willing to put the time and work in to become successful in coding.
Up-to-date skills
Unlike a degree, which focuses on the academia/theoretical side, coding/data science bootcamps focus on the skills that are currently in demand within the industry. The candidates will be learning up-to-date skills and will really be in touch with the industry requirements. They will also be learning those niche skills to bridge the skills gap.
Real applications
Unlike with a degree, many coding / data science bootcamps work on projects with real commercial aspects. Some of the companies that offer these bootcamps build real relationships with organisations and often operate like a consultancy allowing their trainees work on commercial projects. This gives the candidates the ability to step into a business and already understand the ‘real-life’ commercial aspect to their job.
Industry experience
Many of the people that run and teach within these bootcamps still work within the industry, they will know what skills are in most demand and what needs to be taught. Not only does this mean the teachers are in the know but they can give real life examples of projects and can give advice to the candidates.
While there are always pros and cons to any decision, there are plenty of reasons why hiring a coding / data science bootcamp graduate can be positive. As a recruiter within the data and analytics industry I can certainly see a rise in the number of bootcamp graduates.
