4 Reasons Why You Should Start A Podcast In 2021

Be honest with me.

You have been having this incessant debate with yourself for months now, haven’t you? It is always the same question, “Should I be starting a podcast?”.

There is a reason why everyone and their mother is starting podcasts right now. In the world of digital business, content has long since been declared the crown jewel of any operation.

Through it, you can educate, entertain, and engage with current and future customers in a way that is unique to who you are as a brand.

Leaning into communicating from a perspective of delivering value through creativity instead of a purely transactional intent inspires audiences to want to take it all in.

In short, content is king.

The problem is, knowing that you need to create content is not enough.

To be successful, you need to be able to both create creative pieces of work and distribute them to people who will care about it at volumes high enough that you can drive your intended business goals.

In this article, I am going to walk you through exactly why you should start a podcast, tomorrow.

If you have not found your vehicle for communicating your message to the world yet, you are in the right place.

Reason #1 There Can Be a Huge Snowball Effect

One of the biggest concerns that people have against starting a podcast, versus producing content on platforms like YouTube, is that they do not think that podcasting gives them enough discoverability. I beg to differ.

The beauty of podcasting is that it allows you to submit your podcast to many platforms at once.

While you may have to do some set-up work at the start, you will have the power to record one show, upload it once, and have it distributed to 15 platforms that are frequented by millions of people every day all over the world.

Another thing to remember is that podcasting is much closer to an audiobook than a social media post. While a great social media post may earn shares and comments from an audience, a great podcast becomes something to talk about with family, friends, and even coworkers.

Once your core audience gets united around your message, there is potential for massive growth through natural word of mouth.

Reason #2 It Empowers You to Repurpose Content Like A Master

While content is an engine that can drive your business, it also drains a lot of time and energy to create. The beauty of podcasting is that if you do it right, you can create many pieces of content from one take. If you record your podcast with video, you can create clips for your website, email campaign, social media accounts, and more.

Instead of asking why you should start a podcast, you should be asking how many different ways you could use a podcast to your advantage.

You can then create a YouTube channel for your podcast and optimize it so that it is searchable and easy to share with your potential audience. Take it a step further and you can even create blog articles out of each show by creating a transcription.

You don’t have to do all of this at first, but I always look for ways to take one action and benefit from it in multiple ways. I challenge you to join me.

Reason #3 It Gives You the Leverage

Is there a client who you would love to get in front of? Is there an industry leader that you would love to build a relationship with? Is there a problem that you are facing in your business that you would love to pick someone’s brain about? Great. That’s’ exactly why you should start a podcast, it allows you to do just that, by flipping the tables around.

As networking has become more and more digitalized, it has never been easier to reach out to the exact people you would like to speak with, at any time. The problem is that if you can reach out to them, so can anyone else.

As the requests for “A quick 15-min chat” start to pile up, people start to guard their time like their lives depend on it. If you want to get in front of the right people you need something to offer them, and that can be your platform.

When you have your stage, you can then offer it to people who want to be known, which is most people on the planet. People want to discuss their stories and tap into new audiences any way they can, and you can help them do that.

Reason #4 They are One of the Most Digestible Mediums

Unlike with video, emails, or social media content, podcasts and be consumed while a person is doing anything.

People can bring you along with their journey throughout the day when they are driving home, making dinner, or even cleaning out the refrigerator.

That is an invaluable level of intimacy that you are sharing with people who may not have ever connected with you otherwise.

Listening to your voice, taking in your ideas.

Your prospects begin to know, like, and trust you without you ever having to buy them dinner or throw any extravagant events.

Conclusion

If you’ve made it this far, I am hoping that you are no longer wondering why you should start a podcast but I’d be remiss if I didn’t drive the point home one more time.

Podcasting gives you the ability to connect with your target audience in many ways and will only continue to gain in popularity.

According to a recent Nielson study, podcast audiences could double by the year 2023 in the U.S. alone.

As voice technology continues to become a focal point in consumer products, we may see a day when podcasts become one of the most used media channels in modern society.

As people run out of things to listen to, would it be a stretch to imagine that they start asking their voice assistants for ideas?

When your prospects say, “Ok Google, find me a podcast about thought leaders in (insert your industry)”, what do you want them to find?

I am hoping it will be you.

Brilliant article Stephen. Have always believed that if you’re committed to regularly putting out good quality regular podcasts, the skies the limit in cementing your reputation and furthering your brand in whatever your area of expertise is. Having upped my listening to a variety of different podcasts this year (mainly on Sports (Football), LinkedIn, Business, Wellbeing, Art and History it’s definitely been both a source of learning and entertainment. Great post Stephen - well done ????
