4 Reasons to Spend Your Money on Experiences, instead of Stuff

They say Money can't buy happiness... we live in a time where instant gratification rules. Where we like our "things". Or the latest and greatest. I might have some stacks of stuff kicking around here somewhere. Check your place. Closet, garage, attic... It was satisfying at the time right? The only reason I might even remember an old cell phone is to joke about it being an antique.

Experiences are different.

It might seem like a burden to plan and pay for a Great Vacation... but once you Expereince it, the money is almost irrelevant. I still remember travelling over 30 years ago.

1) Getting Out of your Routine is So Powerful

Even if you just go for a walk. Seriously. But this is an article about travel, so I am advocating for at least a few days. I just came back from a cruise. We joke about some of the aspects of it. But I was on a ship in the Caribbean, instead of freezing in Vermont, going to work. Doing my thing. The daily. Ho hum.

2) You will talk about trips for years to come

Whether you go on a bucket list trip or a big family trip or a solo jaunt or a weekend getaway, you will always talk about your experiences.You could spend a thousand dollars on a new TV or an iPhone that will be cool for a little while, or you could spend that money on seeing and experiencing a new place... new tastes, new surroundings new people. Most likely, you will be more fulfilled by the new perspective that you will talk about for a long time to come.

3) Money isn't such a Burden when you are Happy

Just talking about a trip you took makes you happy. You really can't honestly say that about any possessions or stuff you bought. When you experience a new place, environment, culture, food, you will likely find your self saying "it was worth it." Pretty hard to say about that thing you bought, even if it gave you temporary satisfaction. Much less buyers remorse from vacations...

4) Experiences are More meaningful to You

Let's be honest... money can be tough to come by these days. It seems like we are all just trying to make ends meet or save enough for retirement. Yet, most of us take some sort of vacation from our jobs at least once a year. The reason why is because hey actually mean something important to you. Whether it's that weekend getaway, a bucket list rip or a family vacation it's the moments during the trip which you cherish. Those are the kinds of experiences which make the money seem meaningless. For those of you who have trouble with that phrase, how about "an investment that pays dividends a thousand times over."

If you are Truly looking to live a more fulfilling life and create memories, experience new things rather than buy new things.

You may just need to get away. You may have a bucket list. Maybe you are curious. Maybe you travel a lot for business, but never quite had the time to see what you want to see.
