Here are some reasons to turn down a gig:

1. Time

Sometimes you should refuse a speaking gig when there is not enough time to prepare for it. Of course, as a speaker, you should have ample time to prepare for an event to make yourself presentable to the public. If not, then it may be a good time to say no. 

2. Subject

Another thing why you may refuse a speaking event is when the subject or topic of the talk is not within your area of expertise. As a speaker you don’t want to risk giving misleading information to an audience.

3. Schedule

When you are invited to an event, one thing you should also consider is your schedule. You should ask yourself whether you have an event to attend on that specific date. Ask yourself, can I manage this?

4. Negotiations

When speaking for an event, both sides should meet in the middle in order to gain clarification and avoid complication. If you are not satisfied with the negotiations, it may be time to reconsider.
