1. What Do You Want To Get Out of Today’s Meeting?
This simple but tricky personality-fit question almost upturned one of my very brilliant trainees at an interview last week and I thought I should share my experience how to answer it satisfactorily and creatively, but not to Page Kemna's level in the video below (Lol!)
My suggested response:
I’ll like to know more about the company and the position on offer. I’ll like you to know more about me and my skills and experience too. So by the end of the interview, I’ll know whether it’s exactly the right position for me and indeed whether I’m right for your company.
This simple response would help the interviewers to know whether you’re a good fit or not.
2. Tell Me About Your Last Employer?
The best thing to answer here is to talk all-positive about all aspects of your work at your last company. And be very careful to avoid any negatives. If you decide to paint your last employer black before your prospective employer, the belief would be that if they employ you, then that’s the same fate they’ll suffer.
My suggested response:
We worked together well; they were all lovely people. The only reason I’m here today is because I don’t have a lot of opportunities in that company. But I really enjoyed working with my colleagues and the managers.
3. What Type of Team Do You Enjoy Working In?
If the interviewers had given you a clue as to what type of team you’ll be working with, try and match up your skills and experience accordingly.
If they hadn’t given you any hints as to the team that you’ll be working in, try and keep it positive and talk about your work which you enjoyed.
My suggested response:
I work very well with other people and find myself most comfortable with the supporting role. I like meeting goals and achieving objectives. I would be very useful in that capacity within a team.
4. Tell Me About Yourself
This is one of the most difficult questions at an interview, and you would waffle if you don’t understand the principle behind this query and never trained to answer it perfectly like this Japanese had mastered the spinning of a plate on top of another.
The key is to pick 2-3 things in your life/career that are very relevant to the 'REQUIRED CRITERIA' stated on the job description and then tell a story that fits the behaviour.
Also, if you’re unsure of the specifics to narrate or feel uncomfortable, ask the interviewers to clarify: ask for the particular things the interviewer wishes to know about you. Example, say, “there’s so much I can tell you about myself, what specific things will you like to know?” The interviewer's answer would be more targeted and you can then answer conveniently.
Previously, I answered more elaborately this "Tell Me About Yourself" question in my article.
Hope this helps. Tell me what questions to answer in my next articles.
