The Dozen It Series addresses 12 questions around which I have gotten questions over the years.

In the last issue in May, I offered some thoughts on self care.

Back in April, in the first issue, I offered thoughts around Confidence.

So, we have chatted on Confidence... and Caring.

Now, Commitment. Over the years, I have had many an occasion to address the notion of Commitment; the virtue... the strength of character. A mentor of mine years ago said:

  • "Commitment is doing the thing you said you'd do when you felt committed... long after you no longer feel committed".

To reach that, I think there is some prep work.

But First

In Leaducator June 2020, I shared on thoughts for thought, going forward. The idea for me now is daily engagement on character and unity and their place in our world moving forward together, stronger. My Commitment is moving there, ever increasingly. Guided by the 5 Strategies of The Virtues Project and my own longstanding work in leadership training and development, those vehicles for daily and weekly engagement will include:

A Question of Commitment

The above is a taster of where I am going but there is more for me to consider. I offer them up as part of the answers I am getting in asking my own questions. In so doing, I consider Commitment...

Discerning on our decisions is imperative to finding it; Commitment. In order to give our all, confident in our choices, keeping our agreements, loyal to what and who matters most, and strong for the distance... we need to do that discerning. We need to decide on what we will truly give our all; confident and with resolve. The question is what will that be?

4 Questions for Resolve and Commitment

There are 4 questions I believe worthy of note in answering the big question. In Dominion and Daring, this week, I noted... "These next few days will be that. This next week or so, and amidst the concluding of the College year… will see that deep dive. Dabbling does not do it. There are several questions I am ever more intent on honestly and courageously answering:

  1. What does real look like in my work and life?
  2. What does raw imply in terms of how I deliver on it?
  3. How do I understand “the right thing”; what is my metric for same?
  4. How do I define “results” in life?"

Those questions have been sharpened over the years, into these as they are now, and as I am practicing asking and answering them. Let us consider here...

What does real look like in your work and life? How do you imagine Integrity manifested? What does it look like in what you do and who you are?

What does raw imply in terms of how you deliver on it? How do you imagine Candor manifested? What does it look like in what you do and who you are?

How do you understand “the right thing”; what is your metric for same? How do you imagine Righteousness manifested? What does it look like in what you do and who you are?

How do you define “results” in life? How do you imagine Service manifested? What does it look like in what you do and who you are?

What is real to me? How do I deliver on it honestly? How do I do what I best think right in doing so? How will I measure impact of service, in following through on the real, raw and right? I am amidst those questions and answers now, and part of the answer is an ever increasing presence in and on this space of LinkedIn, with daily thoughts and insights around the coolness that is character for us all moving forward. I will be delving into the art and science of this work, exploring it for educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders. I have more to consider on these questions and answers over the next few says and weeks, but I am definitely getting there.

How about You?

How might these 4 questions help you sharpen the blades on Soulful answers for work and life? In these times of change and challenge, our best strength is found within and it is grounded in a true sense of Commitment to to the people, work, causes and life that matters most to us.

Barry Lewis Green, aka The Unity Guy with Epic Engage

Educate, lead, unite and inspire. Move forward together, stronger. My work is about bringing campuses, companies and communities together, moving forward stronger. I work with educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders to do just that. My work is about character leadership and education and its role in helping individuals and organizations build a better world at school, work, business and community. I deliver on it through speaking, coaching and development in character leadership and education. My expertise is character leadership and education. I advance unity in diversity by moving the needle on leadership and education that is high character and results forging. I speak, teach, coach, facilitate, lead, write, sing, dance, cartoon and create on that. In 1980, Professor Rolf Hattenauer changed my life. A highly respected expert in Human Resource Management, he expected much of us and he believed much in us. He was an educator and leader of high character. He was extraordinary. To this day and beyond, I try my darnedest to honor his spirit with my own work. That is another story. But I hope I did him service here.
