In the world of sustainability consulting, the spotlight often shines on technical expertise. For generalists pivoting into this domain, there's a bright side – your existing skills from your prior career are precious resources. ?? ??

Last week, we had the privilege of hosting?Viktoria Ver??and?Cilia Keser?from?Nexio Projects?to share their insights on the qualities they seek in candidates. Additionally, both Cilia and Viktoria have personally experienced career pivots into sustainability consulting. Their journeys underscore that transitioning into sustainability consulting involves creatively applying your previous expertise to address climate and sustainability challenges. Here's why transferable skills are a game-changer. ????

  1. Build on Your Existing Strengths: Your background and skills aren't irrelevant; they're the foundation for your pivot. The experience and expertise you've cultivated throughout your career can be harnessed to tackle sustainability problems creatively.
  2. Embrace Continuous Learning: Sustainability is a dynamic and evolving field. As a consultant, you'll encounter new challenges and industries. Your willingness to learn and adapt is a vital skill. Commit to ongoing education and deep dives into relevant topics.
  3. Pivot with Purpose: Identify the aspects of your previous career that align with sustainability goals. For instance, experience in change management, project management, or organizational development can be invaluable when driving sustainability initiatives within organizations.
  4. Work with Clients to Drive Change: Sustainability consulting isn't just about offering solutions; it's about working collaboratively with clients to address their unique sustainability challenges. Effective communication, project management, and problem-solving skills become key assets in this partnership.
  5. Broader Engagement: The transition to sustainability isn't limited to leaving your current job behind. Explore ways to get involved in sustainability projects or groups within your current organization. Be curious and open to expanding your knowledge in-house.
