4 Myths That Might Have You Tricked Into Believing You're Not Good Enough
Encore Empire
Working with female entrepreneurs to assess, develop, and optimize their businesses for sustainable profitability.
From day one, society teaches girls to be seen, not heard, to be nice little girls, and to make others happy.?We wholeheartedly rebel against the be seen, not heard piece!?And, while there’s nothing wrong with being a nice girl and making others happy, we can quickly build a personal prison that erodes our confidence and dims our light if we don’t learn how to make ourselves happy first.
Having worked with dozens of female entrepreneurs, we see the results of this societal pressure play out on an almost daily basis. Below are four myths that you might be buying into that are tricking you into believing that you’re not good enough:
Myth #1: I’m in the mess I’m in because of a lack of planning on my part.?Not necessarily! This myth came up in a client coaching session this past week. This woman’s business is quickly growing, and she’s more successful than she’s ever been. She doesn’t have a lack of planning problem; she has a new level new devil problem.
When our business grows, and we begin to get busier and busier, it’s great, right? We’ve worked hard to get here. We feel so proud of ourselves. Then, the new level new devil thing rears its ugly head, and we realize things aren’t working. We’re either putting in more and more hours to handle the growth, or things are falling through the cracks.
This is a sure sign that it’s time to take a look at your systems and processes to identify what doesn’t work with this new level of success.?It’s growing pains - that’s all - it is NOT a reflection on your ability or lack of ability to plan.?We can only plan so much. Part of growing means facing new challenges and reacting in real-time so we can develop new processes that better serve us.
When your business revenue suddenly triples, as our client's has, the way you’ve always done things isn’t going to support your new level of success. Your success is a result of you putting in the work and making it happen. Now that success has arrived, you simply need to reassess and create the systems and processes you need to support this new level. You may need to hire help, as is the case with our client. What you don’t need to do is berate yourself!
Myth #2: I must be everything to everybody, or my clients will leave.?It’s not always obvious that you’re harboring this belief. Believing you have to be everything to everyone could have started in childhood, and if so, it’s hardwired into your psyche, and it will take awareness and intentionality to uproot it. When you find yourself bending over backward to serve your clients even though they aren’t requesting that you do so or if you're feeling shame when you’re sick and can’t attend something you committed to, you may be harboring this belief.
We all want to provide the best service possible to our clients. And as women, we are traditionally overachievers. When your entire life has been one of making sure things are good for everyone else, you become numb to the fact that you go way beyond what’s required. We’re not saying to do the bare minimum, but we also don’t want you to put unrealistic expectations on yourself - that’s a sure path to burnout.
Myth #3: I don’t understand business finances, which proves I’m not a real entrepreneur.?We go into business to help others and share our expertise. It’s completely unreasonable to expect that you’ll master every aspect of business, and yet we put that kind of pressure on ourselves all the time. Unless you have a degree in finance, you’re a CPA, Bookkeeper, or Accountant; you will not understand your business finances unless and until you take the time to learn what you need to know. We dive deep into this topic in our latest podcast episode.
Too many women are shaming themselves because they feel inadequate when they don’t know everything they believe they should. Here’s the truth - life is a journey - it allows you to take time to learn what you want to know along the way. You’re not supposed to know it all, and you’ll never reach a day in the future when you do.
Myth #4: Apologizing is polite, and people will like me more when I do.?On the surface, this sentence is accurate, but there’s a dark side to saying you’re sorry, especially when it becomes a habit and gets applied to EVERYTHING!
There are some valid instances when an apology is warranted:
When saying sorry is used too often, you unwittingly perpetuate a dominant/submissive relationship dynamic by assuming the submissive role with your apology. Women are prone to saying sorry because we’re taught to be nice girls.
Just like trying to be everything to everyone becomes ingrained in our way of life, so does apologizing. Both assume that you are responsible for making everything okay for everyone else. Both assume that you are required to take on more responsibility than the other party. Both lead to feelings of inadequacy.
You don’t have to be sorry for taking up space, having different thoughts than others, and believing in yourself.?You are pure magic! You deserve to shine, so step into your power and stop apologizing!
Let’s make a pact to replace limiting beliefs with: We are all good enough just the way we are right this very moment!
