4 of the Most Frequently Asked Questions About the FSA ID

I already have a PIN number, do I have to apply for the FSA ID?

Yes, you will be required to apply for a FSA ID even if you already have a PIN. However, when you create your new FSA ID, you will be given the option to link your PIN which allows you to the bypass the SSA verification process.

When Should I Apply for the FSA ID?

Although, you can apply for the FSA ID on the very first screen of the FAFSA application, I suggest creating the FSA ID prior to beginning the FAFSA. You will already have the information available and it will make the FAFSA process more efficient.

Can the student and parent use the same FSA ID?

No, students and parents must each apply for a unique FSA ID. When the FSA ID is created, it is associated with only one social security number and one email. Each person must have their own FSA ID in order to sign the FAFSA.

What if I forget my FSA ID username or password?

If you forget your FSA ID username, go to https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/pas/pub/ForgotUsername

You can either choose to send a secure code to your email or to answer three of the challenge questions you created in your FSA ID application. Follow the procedures on screen to retrieve the username.

If you forgot your password, go to https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/pas/pub/ForgotPassword.

Again, you can choose to send a secure code to the email address on file or answer three of your challenge questions. Please note that if you use the challenge question option to reset your password, you will be unable to use it for 30 minutes.
