4 Mistakes To Avoid When Embarking On A Physical Challenge

4 Mistakes To Avoid When Embarking On A Physical Challenge

It's January, and you're feeling motivated to sign up for a challenge.

?I have completed over a dozen ultra-marathons.

?Whilst I have the medals. I also have the scars to prove it, so here are my mistakes to avoid.

Let’s jump in!

Mistake #1: I didn’t follow a workout plan

Initially motivated, I downloaded the event organiser's workout plan. BUT... Feeling confident and capable, I initially deviated from the plan, deciding to push myself a little further.

?A few weeks in, my motivation waned, and I worked out based on how I was feeling rather than the guidance and expertise of the event organisers.

Lesson 1

Follow a structured plan, and make sure you stretch!

Mistake #2:?I didn’t get enough sleep

Your body needs time to recover. If you do not take this seriously, you are sabotaging your ability to keep everything moving in the right direction.

Lesson 2:

Go to bed earlier!

Mistake #3: I ate like crap.

Despite improving my fitness, I sabotaged my progress by consuming unhealthy food, before or after believing exercise justified it. But doing this only hindered my performance.

?Lesson 3:

Ditch the crap and fuel your body to set up for success.

?Mistake #4: I didn’t allow for contingency plans.

Despite meticulous planning, unforeseen obstacles like injuries, sick children, exhaustion, and work emergencies constantly pulled me off track.

Things will not go according to plan, and this should be expected.

Lesson 4

Create a minimum target for the day the *hit hits the fan and good day goals for the days when everything is in order.

What challenge are you planning to do this year?

Oh, what a great read Tara! I've enjoyed it from the beginning until the end! I also relate a lot to it, especially the lack of sleep, the crappy food and things pulling me off track! I still need to find a better way to stay fit, but one step at a time (haha, not yet ready to commit to anything). Looking forward to your next ones ??.
