The greatest movement-makers all have one thing in common: they were masterful communicators. Through their words and ways of showing up, they have been able to persuade their people to follow them to the mountaintop.

Please allow me to deconstruct the 4 key elements of becoming an outstanding communicator, in a very substantial way so it’s worth the gift of your time and attention...

Deep Listening. First, please remember that the communicator who listens the best learns the most. If you’re doing all the talking you’re not gathering and exposing yourself to any new ideas.

Second, I’ve discovered that it’s the person asking the questions who is in true control of the conversation. Get great at using brilliant questions sincerely.

Finally, turning up the volume of your listening is one of the finest acts of respect you can show another person, especially in this civilization of people who adore hearing the sound of their own voice.

Being fully present and genuinely engaged (versus checking messages or rehearsing your answer) as you hear the speaker makes the other person feel important, understood and safe with you. This accelerates trust massively. And trust is the bedrock of a great relationship, whether at the workplace or within your home life.

Raw Vulnerability. This one’s another utterly rare trait which means that once you implement it daily you’ll differentiate yourself from everyone in your field.

When you take off the social mask that most human beings wear to look cool and avoid rejection (oh how many gorgeous opportunities are lost because we’re too cool to take a risk and possibly look silly!) others begin to fall in love with you. You being real gives everyone around you permission to be real. Create a culture of people working together around an ethical and enthusiastic central purpose so they realize they are able to be themselves and you generate the magic that makes true movements.

Pretending to be someone that you’re not just to fit in and be liked also consumes huge amounts of emotional energy that is swiftly released to boost your productivity once you have the wisdom and guts to be yourself.

Promise-Keeping. So simple. So transformational. So unusual, these days. To never make even one promise that you cannot keep...

...To be a leader, creative laborer and human being who follows through on each promise you offer, whether it’s to deliver excellence on a project, send the book you assured a client you’d send at a lunch meeting, start the running group you told your friends you’d set up or have a family dinner at least three nights a week.

Keep promises and you’ll become a heavyweight in the eyes of all who know you. The respect, trust and love they have for you will soar. For sure.

Even more importantly are the self-promises you set and then keep for yourself. Practice doing this and you’ll experience explosive growth in your willpower, confidence and ability to get giant things done. You’ll also grow wonderfully in the self-respect that then turns into self-love.

Truth-Speaking. Any lies you make are being witnessed by the high hero that is your essence. Your heroic self sees all love and all betrayal of your egoic side.

Or call that base of pure wisdom, strength and good that sits at your core your conscience. Or your best self. The main point is to appreciate that every act of dishonor diminishes your character. And stains your luminous soul.

By speaking your truth, even when your voice is trembling and your hands are sweating, you’ll multiply your dignity, credibility and advance beautifully in the resolve you bring to everything you do.
