The 4 Key Mental Health Challenges in Children & Young People
Are You a Parent or Professional Working With Young People?
If so, then I’d like to invite you to join me for a live online training (click here to sign up or read more below) in which I will be uncovering practical, therapeutic solutions to dealing with 4 HUGE problems that young people today are experiencing.
More and more, mental health issues in young people are increasing and local services are far too stretched to attend to, what could be classed, as ‘low-level issues’. However there are two major problems with this approach:
- Low level problems, if not addressed early, will grow and manifest into larger ones.
- As services become inundated with mental health cases in young people, the threshold for the severity of issues they are treating is changing. *
*Go back a year or two and if you had a young person experiencing anger issues or self harming, you could get a referral to CAMHS (child and adolescent mental health service). This is not necessarily the case anymore. In the last month I know of two young people who were hospitalised after our practitioners had made safeguarding referrals due to concerns about a child who had not met the threshold for higher level intervention with CAMHS.
News like this breaks my heart but angers me too. If we could have helped them earlier, it might never have come to this.
10% of children and young people (aged 5 – 16 years) have a clinically diagnosable mental health problem, yet 70% of children and adolescents who experience mental health problems have not had appropriate interventions at a sufficiently early age. (figures from the children’s society).
Whilst I can’t promise that this webinar series will address all of the complexities that children with mental health issues experience, there will be plenty of helpful content to enable you to feel much better equipped to help deal with 4 key problems that young people today are experiencing:
Managing Anger in Children
Anger has received relatively little attention in the area of mental health, yet it is a good example of how individuals can promote and protect their mental health. There is a drive to treat anxiety and depression (which are regarded as clinically constructed illnesses) where as anger is seen as an emotion so different to sadness and fear, it has not received the same interest in psychology.
In this webinar I will explain how anger is often used as a defence mechanism to protect oneself from feelings of fear and sadness, and how anger is often a shield used to protect feelings of vulnerability when other mental health problems such as anxiety and depression may be bubbling under the surface.

Improving Low Self-Esteem
Young people these days are bombarded with messages about who they are and how they should be showing up in the world. From their appearance to how they behave. From social media, to unrealistic expectations about self image there is evidence that young people’s self esteem is more vulnerable than ever and that when this becomes a long term problem, it can have very harmful effects on a young persons mental health.
In this webinar, you will learn how to help young people navigate the constant ups and downs of life and how to safeguard from comparing themselves to fake imagery that is constantly shown on media and devices. I’ll teach you a specific strategy that you can use with the young people you know and care about, that will enable you to separate out the positive messages from the negative ones and bring what is usually an unconscious reaction into conscious awareness in the future.

Dealing with Sleep Problems
Are you a parent who has a child with an unstable sleep pattern? Or perhaps you are teacher or professional who is doing your best to work with children who cannot concentrate or focus due to their levels of tiredness – perhaps you’ve even had a child fall asleep in the middle of your session!!
Thousands of children and teenagers are being admitted to hospital for sleep disorders with admissions for conditions such as insomnia almost doubling in the last 7 years. If you had an inkling that there is a problem with children sleeping, you were not wrong.
In this webinar I’ll share with you the top 10 reasons why children and young people are not sleeping as well as they should be, the effects this has on areas of development and mental wellbeing and what you need to do about it to prevent further harm from being caused.

Supporting Those Who Self Harm
If you thought self harming was a teenage attention seeking problem, think again. New figures show that self harming rates among the very young are soaring with referrals to mental health professionals being routinely rejected, even when those close to the child know this is the start of much more severe mental health problems to come. Children as young as three years old are using self harm to release pent up emotions and to use the physical pain to escape from the mental pain.
In this webinar we will explore the reasons why the self-harming epidemic has yet to reach it’s peak and the methods that are currently encouraged to help manage the emotions that drive this behaviour – as well as the recommended guidelines that can in fact, make things much, much worse.
