4 key factors to boost up cooperation with offshore teams

I visited our Kyiv office with one of our clients who came to meet their new R&D team. By the end of the visit, the VP R&D encouraged each team member to share their feelings about this visit. One of the developers summarized it in the best way possible by saying: "I was very happy to see that you are real people..."

In my opinion, this is the essence of any good offshore operation.

Successful offshore teams are built on several key elements which I'd like to highlight:

Good Communication -

Like any other area in life, good communication builds trust, that leads to commitment which leads to success. Encourage people to communicate with each other and share ideas, feedback and feelings.

Video Meetings -

I know it is not always that easy to go on a flight and meet in person. However, it is very easy to make video calls nowadays. So, whenever possible make yourself a habit to use a camera during calls with your offshore teams. See each other's reactions during a call is priceless and creates the first element above - Better communication.

Face to Face Meetings (Visits) -

Yes, It is crucial! Although Video calls can improve communication, there is nothing like spending some time together in order to get your team better. Usually, video calls are used for formal meetings, while on a real face to face experience there is more space for informal communication, which brings the real magic in any relationship and especially with the offshore experience. Make yourself a habit to meet your teams in their location or invite team members to your office every few weeks or at least on a quarterly base.

All Equals -

Treat your remote team as you treat your local ones. A sense of belonging is a key factor in creating a dedicated remote team. Make sure they understand the entire picture, ie. The company's business needs, the entire solution and roadmap. Once they do, it is much easier to achieve the mutual goals you have. Together with that, make sure to recognize and appreciate their good work on a regular base.

Like any other area in life, good communication builds trust, that leads to commitment which leads to success.

In conclusion, every difficulty you have within your local teams, you may take and multiply when working with offshore teams. Thus the importance of taking some actions in terms of communication to boost up your remote teams' cooperation.
