4 Invaluable Sales Lessons From My Two-Year Old That Will Help You Crush Your Goals!

Sales is HARD. To be consistently successful in sales is even harder! Whether you are brand new into it or you've been in professional sales for a while, it does not get easier - you simply become better! However, even the best of the best will hit dips in their sales career. Often times when there is a dip, many will try to overhaul their entire sales process or completely change how they do things. We forget that there are core fundamentals that we essentially need to stick to that will help us weather those dips!

When observing my fun and challenging two-year old son, he has reminded me of four invaluable sales lessons that can help you refocus or help you take your sales game to the next level!

1. Be Stubborn About Your Goals and What You Want

Once my two-year old decides he wants something (ie, a cookie, cupcake, not sleeping, or something else to drive us crazy), he is absolutely relentless towards achieving his goal! Nothing can deter him and it is incredibly hard to distract him with anything else outside of the obtainment of his goal!

How about you? When you set large personal or professional goals, are you relentlessly pursuing it regardless of obstacles being thrown at you? Or are you giving up after a few "no's" or a few tough weeks? Once you set your goals, be stubborn about achieving them and do not get distractions get in your way of obtaining your goals!

2. Be Persistent and Never Give Up

#1 and #2 are directly correlated! Once little Roman Chan, my son, decides on NOT wearing the Thomas the Engine shirt and to wear the polo with the alligator, he will fight tooth and nail to wear the polo! No matter the obstacles, no matter the distractions, he will eventually end up wearing what he wants. He will persist and push back until he eventually achieves his goals!

There is major admiration in a toddlers' persistence and unwavering strength to not give up that we can learn from; once we set goals, there will be obstacles that show up. Be persistent to knock down that target prospect's door and eventually you will get through! It's never a matter of "if" but a matter of "WHEN" and those who are the most persistent are the ones that win the game in the end!

3. Don't Be Afraid to Ask and Go After What You Want

Toddlers are notorious for having no fear and asking/going for what they want:

  • Sees a rain puddle? Jumps in it!
  • Sees a cookie in garbage? Eats it! (Don't worry - I do stop him from doing this most of the time :p )
  • Sees a clean white wall? Draws all over it!

You get the point - they have no fear in asking 1, 2, 3, 4+ times to get what they want! Sometimes regardless of your objection, they go after it anyways!

For you, are you asking for what you want? Are you asking for the business over and over? Are you asking to charge more? Are you asking for the full bundle instead of just a small portion of the business? ASK, ASK, ASK! The point is to not be afraid to ask and go for what you want because you'd be surprised on how often you'll get it!

4. Adjust Your Style and Approach Based on The Audience

I've seen this firsthand with Roman - he will happily come to me to asking for something such as more screen-time on the iPad. If I deny him, he'll push back for a little bit and eventually be fine. HOWEVER, if the audience changes and his grandmother is around, on goes the waterworks and a floor-smashing tantrum that would make the Incredible Hulk proud! This ultimately leads to him getting what he wants!

Roman is smart - he's adjusting his selling approach based on the audience! For you, are you adjusting your style/approach based on your audience? All prospects are different and therefore require you to be fluid in your approach. You must be able to cater your style to adjust to personalities that may be highly analytical to highly visionary. So check yourself - how are you reading each prospect and adjusting approach? Be like Roman!

So there you have it - 4 Invaluable and Timeless Sales Lessons From My Two-Year Old! These lessons are great for self-reflection and can be executed immediately and will result in greater productivity! As we get older, we can easily forget how powerful these simple lessons are. Don't be afraid to tap into your inner-child to achieve your now adult goals! If you liked this article, feel free to comment and share below!

A child doesn’t have the preconceived notions and biases that we as adults tend to let stand in the way of achieving our goals. Children also have the remarkable ability to live directly in the moment, which is exactly what we as salespeople need to do to be successful every day. If you’re focused on past successes or failures you can’t put your energy into taking care of today’s challenges. This article is so on point!
