A 4-Hour Work Day Is Possible. Here's How.

A 4-Hour Work Day Is Possible. Here's How.

You and I and the rest of the world all have something in common. It’s something that Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and all—all—other remarkable industry leaders share with each one of us.

Time.

We all have 24 hours in a day and 60 minutes in an hour. This means we’ve got 1,440 minutes daily to make our life the best life possible. So what do the Gates and Zuckerbergs of the world have that most of us don’t??

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not about being born with a silver spoon or a trust fund. Gates and Zuckerberg were not even born with hefty bank accounts from their parents. What they have is this intentionality on how they spend each day: towards solving, acquiring, or making things happen according to their big Why.

When you wonder why you don’t seem to have enough time, you’re asking yourself the wrong question. ‘Cause newsflash, you’ve got all the time in the world. The question you should as instead is this: how else can I make time work for me? What would it take for me to make the time worthwhile, to spend each minute of my day getting closer to my goal?

The sooner you realize you realize this and be conscious of it, and you’ll be able to make time work with and for you.

After all, time in itself is constant. What you need to look at is energy—when, where, and how you spend your energy. Give yourself a time audit to discover what your essential, day-to-day non-negotiables are: what time do you wake up, how much time do you spend on planning or making your meals, how do you spend your waking hours, what time do you begin to wind down, what is your energy like on mornings or evenings?

Remember: We all take routine for granted, but building these routines and habits are the crucial key players to having a progressive life.?

Once you know how you spend your time and energy in a day, you’ll know how to better manage it. I didn’t recognize that I was spending my time on things that were all but fluff—choosing to sleep in instead of spending some time under the morning sun, for instance—but I once I started to honor my energy, it changed the trajectory of my life and business.

Identify clearly what a typical day would look like for you. Your energy management plays a huge role in everything you do. Without it, you can bid goodbye to efficient work. Pay attention to when you feel most energized and most drained, and you’ll naturally build boundaries that will make standing up for what works for you more intuitive.?

Be intentional, and get your team ready! If you want a 4-hour workday or to take a month-long vacation without worrying about the bills, start looking at the essentials of your business and set standard operating procedures, streamlining your sales process and business operations. This doesn’t just happen overnight, so be patient, and be there for your team every step of the way.

Set milestones and goals for yourself and your team. This habit can extend to other areas of your life as well: how many hours of sleep did you get, how many steps did you take, are you eating food that optimizes your health, how many hours do you spend on meetings, what time do you call it a day? Take ownership and responsibility, and make use of your team! They’re there for a reason. Leverage automation, delegations, and other people’s expertise.

The game-changing success of industry leaders like Gates and Zuckerberg is actually thanks to these very simple processes, as well as to their consistency, patience, grit, and heart of service. They all have this big WHY that evolved from solely serving themselves to serving the people.?

Funding is secondary—they took responsibility for their actions and created their own economy. They laser-focused on their goal and improved on it over and over. It’s the insanity of going through things, again and again, endlessly looking for things to improve.

So I challenge you to build better habits and take a closer, more critical look at what you say yes or no to. Examine where you spend most of your energy, and ask yourself, am I focusing on the right thing?
