4 Expert-Backed Strategies to Ease Election Anxiety

With election day coming up, and with such a divisive and aggressive race, many may feel the stress/ pressure of voicing their opinion and anticipating the outcome. According to a recent poll conducted by the American Psychological Association , more than 77% of adults said the nation’s future is a significant source of stress in their lives, with the economy at 73% and the 2024 U.S. presidential election at 69%. Cities such as NYC are breaking records for early voters showing up to the booths with nearly 258,000 voters casting their ballots ahead of Election Day. Everyone is feeling the stress, so what can you do to stay calm and navigate these turbulent times?

We asked Avril Hogan , a Certified Life Coach and conflict resolution specialist with zant , for her top strategies to ease conflict during this election:

  1. In Moments of Differing Perspectives: “Actively Listen and when you’re tempted to respond with passion or outrage, try phrases such as ‘I understand why you feel that way,’ or ‘I see where you’re coming from,’ Believe it or not – it works”.
  2. Find Common Ground: “It is important to “Resist the urge to correct, invalidate, or dismiss someone’s beliefs. Using statements like,? ‘That’s not true’ or ‘That’s a weak point’ can create defensiveness. Instead, focus on finding common ground if possible” according to Hogan.
  3. Navigating Your Emotions: “Recognize and accept your emotions rather than suppressing them. Acknowledging feelings of anxiety, frustration, or even excitement helps you process them in a more healthy manner.”
  4. Finding Clarity Amid the Chaos: “Focus on what you can control, why it happens, and how to cope. For example: ?

  • Why it Happens: Election outcomes often feel beyond our control, leading to feelings of helplessness.?
  • How to Cope: Engage in activities where you can make a difference, like volunteering or donating to causes you care about.”
