Yesterday, the Government of San Luis declared the administrative emergency after being a victim of a cyber attack.
It was a new case of ransomware virus, a malicious software program that encrypts files and leaves a message demanding the payment of money to restore the system.
While these types of attacks are the order of the day and tend to be increasingly sophisticated, many organizations ignore or underestimate security measures that can save economic and reputational losses.
First, it is essential to keep in mind that the main risk factor is human vulnerability. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a training policy for all employees and make clear individual security measures such as using strong passwords and multiple authentication factors.
In the second place, the operating systems of the entire company must be updated to the latest version, since they must be renewed precisely to strengthen security against new forms of attack.
In the third place, have an advanced malware detection system that is not based on detection by specific patterns and have network policies that isolate the different segments and equipment, to limit the access to them.
Finally, something that is considered essential for any organization is to have a contingency plan in which the above aspects are considered and a specific protocol on how the IT department will act in case of a possible attack. This will avoid wasting time and solving any unforeseen quickly and efficiently.
