4 Easy Ways To Help Your Team Become #CameraConfident

Asking your colleagues to face the camera is not an easy task. So why ask them?
It’s because people will believe your team more than anyone else. They have lived the experience. They are not mimicking it like a paid actor would. Your stakeholders and candidates want to hear it from the horses mouth!
Especially when it’s for those quick turn around videos (where you don’t need a video crew), like video job ads, updates to your team, to candidate pools, employer branding videos and the ones we see on your socials, YouTube, and in your newsletters - we want your people front and centre.
Knowing that your brand and your business values and opportunities are communicated better by your employees whilst received more trustingly by your future ones, how are you going to help this video transformation take place? How will you support a video creation culture at your work?
Leading from the top down, identifying your video champions/leaders and providing education, training, goals, and support are necessary when diving into new skills like creating video content.
In my newsletter today I’ve put together a list of video activities that you and your team can do to help everyone get warmed up. Use these for development days, or as an exercise in a weekly team meeting.
The more common video is at work, the more normal it feels, and from there a video mindset can start to develop.
Also, scroll to the bottom of my newsletter for video examples to see how my client Toll have been using video!
Team video activities:
1. Create an Instagram or Facebook Story.
This is an amazing way to harness their self-confidence as stories only show up within 24 hours and can be buried down memory lane after that.
Buddy up. Make sure to partner social media-savvy with those who are not. Give your team a subject to film. They can do event highlights, interview colleagues, voice over event footage etc. Or you can have them do some storytelling videos like “A Day in A Life of ___” or “How’s It Like to Work in __”. Documenting a topic with short videos for stories will hopefully spark some creativity too with the music and text and video effects that these platforms offer.
2. Create 60- second interviews between colleagues
Sit with your partner and have a Q&A for about 60 seconds. Practise having a conversation in front of the camera. It doesn’t have to be scripted. Allow your thoughts to get used to organising a quick flow so your answers will come out naturally. Brainstorm a bunch of fun and relevant questions before filming. The interviewer can pull these questions out as they interview. This will keep both parties in the present moment, instead of thinking ahead. You may want to set up a designated filming spot in your work environment for this or encourage colleagues to ‘walk and talk’.
3. Practise giving 1-2 minutes messages.
Some things are easier said than emailed. So instead of sending your colleague a quick reminder or an email to check in on some tasks, try filming a video message. No fuss. No backstory. Just say what you are suppose to email and send away! If you want to go one step further, try this with your external customers and send a recap or update to your manager or whole team!

4. Hire a video expert - ME - to facilitate a fun Video Skills Masterclass for your team!
This online webinar empowers your team to get videoing at work - showing them to use the equipment they already have in the workspace environment they’re in. I also take them through camera confidence, managing nerves, and scripting your message too!
Any or all of these activities will help to build the muscle memory needed for these new video skills. Do these on a regular basis and your team will be able to make filming a part of their routine in no time.
You can also spice up these activities with a little competition and prizes. Also, allocate at least 30 mins for those first 3 activities so everyone can watch their videos back too and discuss what they think - their takeaways, and learnings.
I’m sure your team will appreciate a break from their daily tasks to become a celebrity company ambassador for a day or to have a safe space to push past their comfort zone with a supportive buddy and team who are all going through it too!
What among the above activities above will your team prefer? Let me know in the comments below and I’m happy to help you with a strategy for your team if you need assistance.
