4 Easy Techniques to Improve your Ecommerce Shop

As a digital marketing manager at SaaS company specializing in Messenger Marketing for Ecommerce, I get a lot of questions about Ecommerce marketing techniques. We see thousands of Ecommerce shops a month, some of which are running on a small budget. I saw a huge problem... there are many shops interested in running big budgets and optimizing ads before they have established a good on-site experience. Here are my top 4 easy techniques to do just that for small and large budget Ecommerce shops. Make sure to check out #4, it's my favorite.

1. Read your Copy Out Loud

Ecommerce sellers often optimize their content, website and product description for SEO purposes - but good SEO doesn't mean that your site is attractive to buyers (or without spelling errors). Once you've done your SEO research, make sure to read your site and ad content out loud to yourself. This is not a joke. Seriously read it out loud - I promise you you'll catch a few mistakes that you didn't see before.

2. Shop with Your Mom

Your customer journey is one of your top concerns. How customers shop and navigate your site can be tracked by some fancy (and often expensive) tools. Before you get your credit card out to pay for user testing or tracking tools, have your mom, friend, spouse, teenager, etc. shop on your site for you. My recommendation: leave the room and use quicktime to make a screen recording of them shopping and navigating your site. Have them go through each tab of your site and really look around. Then, have them go through the entire sales process, from browsing to purchase. You might notice some errors in your checkout sequence or flow as well as some some oppertunities for conversion optimization.

3. Review and Revise Your Font and Site Colors

Doing a little research on your font and brand colors can go a long way. There are plenty of recommendations, but make sure to use research conducted specifically for Ecommerce. I recommend this Woocommerce article about using color physiology to your store's advantage. Additionally, a bad font can kill your conversion quick. This article is a good one for learning which fonts pair well together for Ecommerce sites. Just to put a little cherry on top, all of the fonts listed by Monica are from Google Fonts, which are free.

4. Become Obsessed with Your Competition

Doing opposition research is a basic step into creating any site. For Ecommerce, doing research isn't enough. Becoming absolutely obsessed with your competition will give you insights and updates that some competition research tools will not. Use these tactics to not just do your research, but keep updated on your competition's marketing, products, and strategy.

  • Group your competitors by type
  • Subscribe to their newsletters, social media, push notifications, etc.
  • Have a reminder in your calendar to check their site on a biweekly basis
  • Do some serious competitor SEO research for content
  • Check their ads on Facebook with this technique
  • On a monthly basis, check for new competition

So what now?

So those are the basics- 4 things I wish that I could tell every Ecommerce marketer to check on their website. Have you looked through all of these recommendations and thought to yourself, 'I'm already doing all of these things, but I still need help in communicating with my customers'? That means that we need to have a chat.
