4 Deep Mindset Shifts for Better Goal Setting
Original Goal Setting is dead! And so, we need better ways and frameworks to Set more Empowering Goals.
Our #Goals need to be connected to something larger and have more “meat" to them.
So here are four ways to set better Goals starting Today (Not the 1st of Jan)!
Steal this S.I.P.P. Framework and get moving in the right direction with your Goals for 2023 and beyond.
S for Skills.
Our Goals need to improve our current or build New Skill Sets.
Skills allow us to Do and add real value to the world. They also cannot be taken away from us, #Skills are with us for Life whereas outcomes come and go.
A great example of this is language learning. I’m in the process of learning French as my fourth language skill, and every single session of learning is about growth while I make deposits of this skill into my toolbox.
I for Identity.
Tie your Goals to a new Identity. A person whom you want to Become!
Instead of making a Goal of running a Marathon, become a Runner. A person who runs and has a #Lifestyle based on running.
Identity-based goals are some of the more powerful ways to look at our Goals based on long-term results. Short-term satisfaction and instant gratification seekers will surely struggle to comprehend and implement this part...
P for Purpose.
Your Goals are for you, and you get something through them, yet when they simultaneously help others, they have a larger meaning to them.
Our Goals become a source of Purpose when they positively impact other people.
Think of what contributions your Goals leave for others instead of just what you get through them.
I will personally try to always think and base all my goals around my #Purpose.
It also becomes much easier to stay on track with the Process when the daily actions and habits are ultimately not about us, but how we can help others!
Speaking of which…

P for Process.
Outcomes Vs. Process.
The age-old debate of which is a more powerful motivator and a source of #Power for people. The common and old way of setting goals is about the outcomes and end destinations.
They of course matter and so should they, yet
There is more power and possibility to influence the outcome when we direct our Focus to a Process.
Let’s use a simple example from running again.
I want to run and complete a marathon in under 4h Vs. I will run four times per week!
Focused Goal setting based on the process will allow us also to stay more present.
This is vital especially when setting big goals that are often outside of our daily motivational threshold.
Meaning that when the goals are too far out of reach it becomes hard to stay motivated or inspired about them.
By setting tangible daily and weekly process-based Goals we stay motivated and on offense toward our Goals!
There you have it. That’s the fresher and deeper S.I.P.P. framework for Goal Setting.
Which letter resonated the most with you!?

2 年I really like your S.I.I.P. Framework Tuomo Vauhkonen! I agree that old goal making is dead and really wasn't alive previously since many professionals and leaders would simply set some quantitative and workforce goals. Your framework attaches the element of a person's capability (importance of acquiring skillsets) to the outcome, the end goal vision, the all-important purpose that in my world means being strategic, and the process which to means creating/improving a best practice methodology that can be repeated. I'm a big process guy so you hit a good nerve with me on that one. Great topic and framework!

2 年Great article Tuomo Vauhkonen! I think one thing that's missing in everyone's goal setting which is why over 97% never reach our goals is feeling. What do we want to feel when we get there? What do we want to feel more of by setting that goal? Because goals are not as exciting as much as the feeling of feeling accomplished/successful/confident that we did it. We are playing for the feeling of accomplishment and driven by it.
