4 books I've recently read: which are worth talking about

Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race: Rene Eddo-Lodge

This book is persuasively powerful and provocative and is probably the one book that evoked the most emotion while reading. It caused me to think deeper about the conscious and unconscious bias that can be a stumbling block in my life and the lives of others. It’s based on a subject close to my heart, tackling inequality, prejudice, negative stereotypes and racism. It will open your mind, change that way you think, which is what all good books should do.

Drive: Daniel H. Pink

Plugging the gap between what science knows and what business does. This was a fresh view of motivation. What I learned was that I thought I knew much more about what motivates me than I actually did.

Principles: Ray Dalio

Having principles to guide my life has proven extremely effective for me but this book goes beyond what I thought my principles were. It dives deeper. It dives into the inter recesses of your thinking, motivation and how you see yourself and others. At its core, it has the thread of the need for radical transparency and to be radically open minded. He adds that the two biggest challenges to overcome when making decisions are your ego and your blind spots and then explains in detail how to recognise them and how to overcome them. (FYI: the Audible version comes with a supporting PDF).

How to talk so little kids will listen: Joanna Faber & Julie King

The changes I witnessed in my daughter from age 2 to 3 were both wonderful and challenging. Learning from such a young age to understand her emotions and deal with those emotions was a big deal for her and for me. I started to look for books that could help me understand how to help her understand these emotions and provided tools and techniques to support this transition. Now. It hasn’t been perfect, and not all of them work every time, but this book has opened my eyes to understanding how to deal with her frustration, anger, hunger, fatigue, loss, praise etc. It turns out most 2 years olds need to be treated just like adults do. Who knew? (FYI: the Audible version comes with a supporting PDF).
