The 4 biggest secrets I learned from eCommerce experts

We’ve all seen those YouTube ads pop up. Usually something like this:

YT: “Do you want to know how I made four figures weekly from my bedroom?”

ME: “Not sure I want to know anything that happens in your bedroom”

YT: “Don’t touch that skip button because I have perfected a way to…”

ME: “Oh, I am so pushing that skip button. You’re getting between me and the best bits of The Office”

But, here’s the thing, there are really people making great money from online businesses. One of the great things about my job is that I’ve actually listened to a whole bunch of them and learned about how they do it.?

Mostly, they run eCommerce stores from their home office using platforms like Printify to supply people worldwide. It’s great because you’re not putting anything at risk except for your time.?

I haven’t yet spoken to the guy from the YouTube ad who is making money in his bedroom, and there’s a chance he was just a snake oil salesman who’d never sold a product himself, but the people I’ve listened to and read are legit.?

I know because I’ve seen their sales dashboards.?

Yes, they’ve all branched out into coaching/teaching/schooling others in how to do dropshipping/Print-on-demand, but we don’t interview them if they don’t know how to walk their talk.?

And they may hate me for this, but I’ve condensed what they’ve taught me into a list.?

1.You won’t succeed right away.

If you’re looking to make money quickly, try something else. Almost all the Experts we’ve spoken to on the Printify blog say stuff like

“This isn’t a computer game with cheat codes”

“It takes a while to find a product that sells well”

Profit takes time and patience, so armor yourself with it.

2. Are you a Brand Contributor or a Brand Builder?

There are two broad approaches when it comes to selling products online.?

You can sell on a marketplace – the two most popular are Amazon and Etsy – or you can build your own brand and build a website by using something like WiX, Squarespace, or Shopify.?

Both approaches have merits and drawbacks. Here they are in a nutshell, a few sentences.?

3.Research, research, research

Whatever approach you take, you need to create something real people will buy.?

Sadly, you yourself are only one person. So even if you think, “I love this design,” it doesn’t mean anyone else will. So it’s best to find out what people will actually buy.?

There are ways to do this:

  1. Ask people you know
  2. Use tools like Erank and Google Trends to see what people are buying
  3. Experiment a lot with your listings until you find something that people buy

4. You don’t have to be good at design, but someone does

The most common answer from our experts to the question “what do you see people struggling with” is usually a sentence containing the word?design.??

If you have a quick look at successful stores run on something like Shopify or Etsy, you’ll see that many of them are not stunningly beautiful, but none of them look like they were designed by your 3-year-old.?

If you don’t know the basics of graphic design – color complimenting, margins, font agreement, etc. – get help from someone who does. If you don’t know anyone that’s good with that stuff, you can get help from places like Fiverr.?

So, the next time one of those YouTube ads pops up, consider watching it for a bit. Or better still, read the?Expert Tips?articles on the Printify blog, it’ll be cheaper. But either way, maybe don’t spend too much time watching clips of The Office, better to watch it all again from the start on Netflix.?
